I have a 98 svt mtx that i just noticed some tranny fluid under in the garage. I crawled under it and it appears the leak is at where the halfshaft enters the trans on the drivers side. I'm not real familiar with fwd transaxles and halfshafts but , if it is leaking from there is there a seal that could be bad,? or something more serious. As far as i can tell all gears and the clutch engage /disengage smoothly. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Not that I'm aware of, I've only had the car for a few weeks though. I just noticed the spot on the garage floor yesterday. I'm pretty anal about things leaking so i know it just started. I did replace the pass side strut this past weekend, I guess I could have knocked something loose on the other side of the car? Doesn't seem very likely to me though.

Most likely worn seal. Motorcraft is the only one that manf. the seal. So you'll have to get it from a dealer or a local parts place that sells Motorcraft. They are about $10-15. Need a large flat screwdriver to pry it out. Then go to home depot and pickup a 2" x 2' section of PCV pipe to drive it in with a 5 lb. hammer.

Thanks for the info guys, I'ts going to the dealer monday to see if they will fix it under warranty (engine /cv shaft/ hub assbly all replaced by ford dealership 9k ago) if not it looks like I'll be doing it myself. Wasn't sure if there was a backside to the seal inside the trans casing.Anyway thanks again for the input.

I have the same leak, but it is so slow that it only leaks a quarter size spot over 8 months when car was in storage when I was in college. Hopefully yours get yours fixed.

They're leaning twards the "the seal was'nt replaced with the axle so you're S.O.L." reply I should know definately tomarrow.

It's part of the job at a shop to do that. Should not be put on you because they didn't do it. Ask them how they know if the tech didn't damage the seal putting the axle in.

I wound up having to have them replace it, they gave me a big runaround because I didn't have the paperwork for all the parts that were replaced originally and I was not the person to have the original work done. God I hate stealerships:mad:  .It is a $13.00 seal that they replaced but it cost $127.00 to have it fixed $27.00 for trans fluid??????? Oh well at least now my car is not markin territory in my driveway anymore.
Thanks again for all the advice
