Lash Adjuster Question

I'm halfway done putting together my 2.5 getting ready to drop in back in this Cougar I picked up and am wondering what is normal behavior for these bad boys? They have about 115k miles on them. I know the roller bearings ride on them and they just sort of function as a pivot point, but probably about half of them seem like they compress slightly but then bottom out when I squeeze them (with oil coming out) and the other half or so don't really compress at all. So which is normal? I've heard you don't want to be able to compress them all the way by hand but these compress just a little.

Thanks ahead of time.

i couldnt compress mine by hand, like you said just a little. Oil did come out of mine too.

I had to use some massive pliers to compress them and some tiny allen wrenches served as pins to lock them in the compressed position. Installed them along with all other timing components. Removed pins carefully and good to go.

Oil pressure should provide the force necessary for them to do their job.

At least this is the way I see them working.

Are you referring to the lash adjusters or the timing chain tensioners? Those I had to compress and lock into place but I don't know why you'd need to compress the lash adjusters/lifters that I'm referring to. I'm going to just try and pick up a set of lower mileage ones in better condition. I know when I pulled apart my SVT these didn't compress at all so I'm thinking these are bad (also thanks to Buckshot's advice)
