What is this wire for

when I was swapping out hoods, there was a black wire that appeared to be a ground for something that came from below the hinges and bolted directly to the hood. Since my new hood was carbon fiber, there was no point in hooking it up to that. My question is, what is it for? I have it just dangling there now, and everything seems to work fine. Any ideas?

If it was just bolted to the hood, then it was some sort of ground wire. Find a spot where the wire can reach to a metal contact on the car w/ a pre-existing bolt that can be removed. Remove the bolt and place it there. Its better to be safe than sorry.

It grounds your hood to the rest of the car... same concept as the engine ground.

It's pretty much not useful to you at all, but you can ground the hinge I guess

Yes, as mentioned above, it is a ground. Probably, an additional bonding strap. Here is what Big Jim had to say of one which was gounded to the mount by the Power steering pump.

'It is a "bonding strap". It goes from the motor mount (in front of the power steering pump) to the firewall. At the motor mount, it is held by the same bolt that holds the bracket to hold the power steering line up and away from the engine. It provides additional grounding ("bonding") between the engine and the firewall.' Big Jim.

Hey now, if you somehow were touching the carbon fiber and the car at the same time then say, lightning struck the carbon fiber hood, you could get zapped since you removed the path!!!

Now, is that ever going to happen? :ponder:

actually if I am not mistaken, carbon does conduct electricity... just not very well... I'm going to just bold the wire to my fender. Now I just need to find some way to lock these stupid hood pins so no one steals my battery...

Get a tiny luggage lock...

Not very strong, but would deter someone walking by.
