Hey guys I have my trans coming back from Terry with pretty much every mod, save for a custom gearset. I plan to buy a new pair of GCK halfshafts, SPEC stg. 1/SPEC Flywheel, and 3 qts. of Royal Purple Synchromax. Is there anything else you would recommend me replacing while the trans is out? I plan to pull the motor/trans as one complete unit. So on will go my headers and DMD/underdrive pullies. If Im missing anything let me know. Also with my headers, I bought a set of the WR's and they didnt come with any hardware. Does anyone know what hardware I will need to attach the headers to the y-pipe? Thanks.

You want 6 qts. of Synchromax because you will change it out when you're done breaking it in.

Replace the alternator if it has miles on it.

For the exhaust hardware, just go to the hardware store, buy some stainless steel bolts of various lengths and widths, and return the ones you don't use. Keep the receipt! Don't forget to use anti-seize on the hardware.

Have you made your MILs yet?

I did buy a set of MIL's and have the exhaust gaskets, studs/nuts. Thanks for the tip on the break-in. How many miles on the initial fill until I need to change it?

Tranny fluid

Tranny fluid

You should consider following Terry's advice and fill the tranny with Motorcraft Full Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid(golden honey),
Part # XT-M5-QS. He says it is the ONLY thing to use in the MTX-75
and I think he knows what he is talking about.

Umm no. In goes the trans fluid and stays until about 35k or so. Do you flush fluid from a brand new car from the factory?

Not what I was told when my trans was done. Put in some ATF or something, dont remember what it was, and a couple thousand miles later (break in period) I switched out to RPS.

I had the coated internals and Terry told me to change my fluid after about 500 miles of break in style driving. If he doesn't have the coating, then I don't know.

Why someone would put automatic transmission fluid in a manual transmission beats me... The fluids are specifically designed for a specific application... It even says it in the name...

Put Ford honey in it - I was extremely surprised on the quality.

If you have a new LSD it's recommended to do a "break-in", do that because of the friction surfaces in the LSD that actually wear and leave particles in the fluid. I would consider it simliar to breaking in an engine.

I used ATF for the first 500 because it's supposed to help break in quicker (anything non-synthetic) AND it doesn't cost 15 bucks a quart like Ford honey. Once it's broken in I'd switch to something synthetic and high quality like the RP Synchromesh, Ford Honey, or what I use is Torco. IIRC some of the MTX's even came with ATF. That's what a lot of manual transmissions use from the factory.

The whole trans fluid issue has been debated forever and even Terry has changed his mind so I wouldn't consider Ford Honey the only answer.

Synchromax FTW. There are many fluid options, but Royal Purple is one of them. Good stuff.

Terry explained to me that it is a good idea to break in your tranny with the same fluid that you will be running after the break in period. The fluid will leach into the porous metals, so you want to make sure that you don't have anything go into the tranny that you don't want to be in there long-term.

Ding ding ding

Exactly what I did

You can say that again

Uhm.. because ford ATF was SPEC'd on the MTX-75 from FORD??

"it even says it in the name"???

so what?!?

:nonono:

If I were going to flush it would be with some cheap Valvoline ATF. Then some Royal Purple or Ford Honey. No way am I throwing that expensive stuff in it for a couple hundred miles.

Yeah I do have the coated gears and a Quaife. Didnt mean to turn this into another trans. fluid debate but thanks to all who replied. Im assuming that Terry will include break-in instructions with my trans.

what is the point of coated gears, I never hear of anyone breaking gears on a csvt

from TH:

Koated Kogbox is
> wher all the> gears,blockers,syncros,shafts etc are
> treated with 3> types of baked on hi-tec coatings to
> *reduce> wear*reduce friction*increase
> strength*reduce 'gear> rollover' nois.This runs $300
> per trans.

It is a protection, but not so much to prevent gears from breaking. It has also made my Spec/rollover noise much quieter.

Well mainly I just wanted to do it all now in preparation for a 3L turbo later on. Instead of sending it back in 8 months to get the rest of the mods done. Hopefully I will be ordering a Nautilus kit in the near future.
