I have a 1998.5 SVT Contour. I have a weird humming/rubbing noise coming from my driver side front tire (maybe). It gets really loud b/t 30 mph and 40 mph. I do have a slight clicking noice (cv) when I turn the wheel hard and accelerate. But I don't think that's the problem. The Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. If more detail is needed, let me know.

Additionally, it gets louder if I slightly turn the wheel to the left

Could be the axle. I know I need a new one and can hear it going straight but it isnt loud though. wheel bearing would be a thought but not if it doesnt do it always.

I think this is two different problems.

Clicking is the Drive axel on whatever side you hear it, Humming is going to be a wheel bearing, that is a textbook description of a failing wheel bearing, if it gets louder on a certain direction of turn, EG turn left, it gets louder on the right, then its your right front wheel bearing, etc etc.

Welcome :) . Do the o'clock test.

O'clock test

Jack up the car one side. Place on jack stand.

Grasp wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and push in and out. Any movement, most probably suspect wheel bearing.

9 and 3 o'clock - tie-rod/ball joint.

Lower the car and do the same for the other side.

Anyone have any experience in getting a wheel bearing replaced, like how much does it cost? ANy thoughts will be very helpful.

Thanks for the input. I really hope a wheel bearing is the only problem. Thnx

Ugg, I have the same humming when I turn to the right

How long do you think I can run on this? Will there be other warning signs as it gets worse? I have heard that the wheel can fall off depending on the hub design, true for a Contour?

Just had it done for $383, parts, labor, tax. The old bearing came off in pieces. The outer race had chunks missing from the bearing surface. I suspect that one or more of the balls had fractured, and fragments were caught between the balls and the races. One small damaged area of the outer race looked like it had locally melted and re-solidified. Which might explain why the car sounded like it had a machine gun going off underneath it when driving down the freeway.

I Just called my local ford dealer and they said parts and labor would run around $285 to replace the wheel bearing. I called my local parts store and they said $50 for the part, BUT it's a press-in and I don't think I have the knowledge to replace it. So It looks like I will be spending $300 :(

iirc a new hub with bearing is about $150 and that isn't to hard to swap out yourself if you hvae the tools

there is a how-to for bearing replacement, and ALL options (self removal, shop removal, self removal with shop pressing it out, etc, etc)

try reading up on that, instead of in here
