No CEL, wicked misfiring on brand new plugs

I really do not get this. With the car idling I can sit and floor it revving it up to 7k and no misfire, but as soon as I am under load the car just misfires like crazy.

I was getting a similar misfire with the 2.5L, but it would go away after the secondaries kicked in.

I now have a 3L without secondaries. The thing that drives me nuts is that 3 weeks ago I had gotten rid of the CEL for the p0402 and threw some new plugs in. I was misfire free for over a week and then bam it comes back. So I removed my EGR system (the CEL had come back) and turned it off in the tune.

I had assumed that too much EGR would give me the misfire, but the problem is that there is no more EGR system, still a misfire and no CELs.

I'm sure my descriptions aren't the greatest, but I am in the middle of studying for two exams I have on monday/tuesday. :blackeye:

Try checking the SP gaps. In addition, you may want to post some PIDs (freeze frame data) during the misfire.

Edit. Some things to check for when CELs are not present but engine misfires (or runs rough).
1) Ignition system (coil, sp, gap, sp wires)
2) Fuel system (filter, pump)
3) Exhaust (leaks, restrictions)
4) EVAP (saturated EVAP canister)
5) Engine compression (valve and timing chain condition, camshaft, intake manifold leaks)
6) MAF and IAT sensor
7) And of course PCM

I noticed last night that once I go past 1/4 throttle...the car goes dangerously lean. Like 18:1. I am using the stock fuel tables. This makes no sense, I am parting the car out.

Everything you mentioned above is either new or nearly new with the exception of the PCM.

"I noticed last night that once I go past 1/4 throttle...the car goes dangerously lean. Like 18:1."

This sounds like a tuning issue. warmonger might be able to help out there but....

"I am parting the car out."

Sorry to hear that.

I had a similar problem... Every time I would throw a brand new set of plugs in I wouldnt have misfires for about a month, turned out my coil pack was defective.

Pete gets mad at his own sucky tuning skills.

Todd I'm using the stock fuel tables! And part of it is yes I am mad at my own sucky tuning skills if it is in fact that, but my car has been a PITA since day one of this swap. Tuning my car has been a complete *****. I have learned a lot, but the SE PCM just blows donkey cock.
Unless there is some big thing I am missing in turning off the EGR...which is possible, then this is not something I have time to deal with.

As for the coil pack this is my second brand new one.

What should be done to the tune to account for the removal of the EGR? I have turned off the EGR, and had the file set so the other DTC is disabled, but the car intermittently runs like crap. (granted I installed 60# inj and removed EGR at the same time)

With the adaptive learning off but O2 sensor enabled the thing will stall over & over. I can clutch & lift the gas and the tach will just drop like a brick! When cruising the FJO reads 15:1 lean the majority of the time. Sometimes at light throttle it'll just climp to 18:1 I can give it a tad more gas & the AF is just stuck there until I really lean into the pedal, or let off (which usually causes 20:1 fuel cut)

With the O2 sensors off the car runs a LOT better, but runs rich. in the 12's, and crazy rich when cold. I've been told to fix the maf transfer and all that will be taken care of, but if I lean the MAF X and turn the O2 sensors on it just runs leaner!

I've fixed the ISC duty, set the idle, set the TPS voltage to .98, tried old O2 transport values, and NOTHING even has any effect!

I did have a kenne bell spitting a lot of blower case oil into the engine. Could this have made my O2 sensors retarded? The FJO still reads perfect, and the logs show the stock O2 sensors swing and generally match what the FJO reads...

Any advice from the experts?

I took this from the Xcal2 boards...I am basically experiencing the same thing and of course...there was no response to this guys questions over there...

I had misfires from spark plug carbon tracking. If there is any dirt on the plug insulators (like from the socket), you will get misfires at 2300 rpm, 35-40 mph. Car surges. Clean the plug boots out, grease with silicone ignition grease, check the plugs for gray/black lines of carbon on the insulators. I had misfire on cylinder 2, rear center. Is there a code for that in your scan?

well that quote is from a KB terminator. I was just using that as an example because my car is suffering similar symptoms.

I am going to replace my fuel pump this weekend. The car is going incredibly lean and I know the injectors are good. After speaking with a more knowledgable gentleman I have decided that it would be worthy to replace the fuel pump.
