My 98 SVT has 138k on it. I purchased it with 133k. From what I've read, the water pump tends to die really early in years. Do you think that mine has been replaced if I've gone this long with no problems? I do see the needle rise on the temp gauge especially if I am stopped and sitting a bit with the engine running, It will go to the "M" then the fan will come on.

It might have been replaced by the previous owner or you have one of the few ones that don't break early. I know when I bought my 96 SE back in 1998 two weeks after I bought it the water pump went out. Car only had 51,000 miles on. It was replaced by the dealship under warranty and currently has 157,000 miles on it and has not broke yet.

If I was you I would replace it soon, as preventative maintenance.

This is normal. Chances are your WP impeller has been changed but you don't know when.

If you are concerned, changed the water pump for peace of mind. If the WP breaks and you don't catch it in time, you are looking at, a minimum, a head gasket job (about $1,500).

69Boss302 has an excellent how to.

The SVT's always seem to run a little over half way on the temp gauge. I would change the water pump to be safe and with that many miles. The SVT's came with plastic propellers on the water pump. I replaced mine with a metal propeller water pump from BAT Inc. Good luck!

Where can I acquire a metal impellar for my water pump? What is BAT Inc.'s website? Does the propeller come out of the pump itself?

Thanks,
Adam

My E0 98 had around 69K miles on it when I bought it and had the correct beige impeller. I only replaced it just a few weeks ago because it was leaking coolant through the weep hole. Of equal importance to the impeller is the condition of the cone piece in which the impeller spins. If this part comes adrift the coolant flow is adversely affected.

same here id change it for the metal one, when i first got my st24 i changed the water pump for a metal one i brought on a group buy after readin what could happen, i had the revised white impellar in mine but still changed it over for the sake of 30 pounds, which is cheaper than a headgasket job, the engine im currently rebuilting had the black plastic one in there and when i took off the housing this is what i found in there

as said id change it if u havent already done so :)
