Junkyard Alarm

I was at the local junkyard when I found a Mystique with a "Pursuit Pro 9230" alarm. The date stamped in the plastic indicates it was from 94 (mystique was a 95.) I was assuming this was a factory install but upon closer inspection and location of the unit it was not.

It was taped horribly with electrical tape to the backside of the plastic panel right below the steering column (not the actual column but the panel that has the little drop down cubby hole.)

Anyways, I pulled the alarm box, the harness's, dash indicator light and the "shock sensor" that was plugged into it. Now, the front engine bay was tore up and I did not see a horn, so I figured one from Advanced would work. And of course, there was no transmitter remote.

Now my question is this, is this alarm worth putting in? Can I find replacement transmitter and a cheap horn and have a cheap alarm? Should I just buy a new complete set? I don't plan on keeping the car longer than another year and I figured an alarm would add a bit of value. There has been some recent vehicle thefts in the neighborhood and I am not looking for a remote start and all that. I just want something to wake me up at night, or atleast to scare them away.

For the cost of the replacement transmitter (if you can even find one for a 13-year-old alarm system) and hassles, you might as well buy the cheapest new alarm at Best Buy or something. Transmitters typically run $50 from what I've seen, you'll also have to buy a siren. After those expenses, you can test the system to see if it actually works (you'll be SOL if it doesn't) and then have the fun of installing it.

For just a little bit more you can buy a new one with free install and warranty.

So, installing the old one will certainly be an adventure, but since you don't even know that it works I would not bother.

I have an aftermarket Pursuit. Yep, they did not even tape the transponder anywhere and it was a big shock the first time this "big" box fell on my foot. Anyway, it is not worth anything. It did not come with an alarm but I was told you could add it on later. It was installed so that I could have keyless entry. My Contour came with power door locks but no keyless entry (remote door lock opener). The range of the fob is about a foot from the door. Any further and it doesn't work. In addition, it doesn't flash the lights or bleep the horn when it locks or unlocks the doors.

Get another brand installed with alarm and lights for $100 or so at Circuit City or Best Buy.
