How hard/impossible is it to change a flywheel?

I'm thinking about swapping out the 22 pound ATX flywheel for the 16 pound SVT version. As far as I can tell there is not any difference between the flywheels but I could be very very wrong. Please correct me if I am!

But if it does fit, does the trans have to be pulled for the plates to be swapped? Or is this do-able with the motor and trans in the car? ( have never done trans work before, so forgive the nubness)

I would think that the bolt patern for the pressure plate vs tc would be different.

to change it you need to pull the trans so you have access to the rear of the enigne to get the flywheel off.

also would the reduces weight be good for an atx?

A flywheel its used for storage of rotational engery, since I'm always on the gas or on the brakes ( I rarely coast anywhere ) the energy wasted into continously turning the mass, I would think the swap would free up some acceleration and MPG.

But I have never seen a picture of the ATX flywheel so I'm not sure if the bolt pattern is different. I would think they are identical cause the flywheel is generally held as part of the motor. But i'm not sure  Also I was checking the advance auto parts catalog and there is only one flywheel listed for SE and SVT, and there was not a trans reference. Not even sure you can get a svt replacement either.

Also if I need to pull the trans then its out of the question. I thought maybe it was possible to just undue the motor mounts shift the trans and motor slightly in different direction to make enough space.

Your sig says you have and ATX = auto. If this is correct you don't have a flywheel. You have a flexplate which the torque converter bolts to. A manual transmission has a flywheel which the clutch assembly bolts to. You cannot install an MTX flywheel on an ATX car. Completely different.

 Sorry then. I was looking through pictures of repair manuals and it only mentioned removal of the pressure plate IF you had a manual. Chilton's had two pictures for the Zetec block (one auto and one manual) and only one for the Duratec. I just assumed it used the same flywheel and that the flex plate sat somewhere between the flywheel and the torque convertor. :blackeye:

Does anyone have a picture of what the different parts actually look like? Cause now I"m confused and wondering about how the whole setup looks like.

This isn't specific to the Contour ATX, but doesn't have to be. Here's a shot of a TQC and the corresponding flexplate. Three or more dowels on the front of the torque converter plug into holes in the flexplate.

All told, a flywheel doesn't look much different than a flexplate, but they're not interchangeable.

All a flex plate is, is a thin plate the TC bolts to, that bolts to the crank and has a ring for the starter to engage.
A fly wheel is a thick plate with a mating surface for the clutch to engage to divert the engine power through the trans, and a starter ring like the flex plate.

Pretty surprised the flexplate weighs more than a flywheel!

is the stock mtx pressure plate 22lbs versus 20lbs for the svt as well? i know its a moot point now but if someone searchs and finds this thread the answer will be here.
