i dont know how to get at my wheel bearing. i have a 98CSVT.

first of all i dont understand how the nut on the hub is locked on by those four bolts and the pin that goes around it. anywhoo, i got the rotor off .. but now i dont know how to get at the wheel bearing.. i used a puller to try and pull the hub off, but its not even close to budging, and theres nothing else i can think of to even try.

any ideas would help.. thanks

its the front R wheel bearing, and the middle nut is off ,, now i thought all i had to do was use the puller to pull the hub off, but its not even close to budging.. and as i read through the contiqe haynes manual, it says you have to mess with the knucke joint or something. im putting a maassssive amount of pressure to pull the hub off, i beat it to break any rust...

im lost.. help!!

to change a wheel bearing you have to remove the whole hub from the car. you need to disconnect the tie rod end, ball joint and strut. then you need to press the axle out of the bearing. Then the hub will be free and you can change the bearing.

If you have problems removing the hub from the car, good luck trying to remove and replace the bearing. Mine was so tight in the hub that the guy that pressed it out shattered the piece he was using in a press to press it out. You might concider having it done by a shop with the tools to do it right, or you could injure yourself...no pun inteneded.

Hey svtd00d,just replaced rf wheel bearing on my 97 contour. It's not too bad, just things seem abit frozen. After the machine shop presses your bearing and hub, reassembly is easier.Remember you need to replace the nut on the end of the cv shaft, had to get mine from ford. it cost 10 bucks and is a one time use.Good luck and have lots of wd40 on hand.-Paul

I ordered the two axle nuts i needed from ford, and yes they were 10$ a piece, but as i continued, they insisted that it wasn't a one time use bolt. Regardless i had to buy them anyway because i broke the pins off of it just by virtue of not understanding the bolt to begin with.

Also, as i put pieces back together, im having trouble getting the axle completely out of the hub assembly to properly tighten the axle nut; Im guessing there is a specific tool for this job?

OK, I'm having a little trouble following.Did you mean you are having trouble getting the axle IN the hub assembly to properly tighten the axle nut?Assuming you got you new bearing pressed in the hub.If so you have to turn the shaft abit to line up the splines, mine didn't go completely in all the way until I started to tighten the nut,but i made sure it was lining up and sliding in ok.The link that eepal gave you earlier in this thread is right on,and how i did mine,-Paul

yea, i had picked up my new axle nuts and i wasnt sure if i should tighten them to pull the axle all the way back out or rent a puller, but i just tested my luck and kept torquing till it pulled the axle out.

everything went back together okay and the car drives smoooth!! thanks for all your help!

hopefully it was worth what it would have cost to have a mechanic change brakes rotors and bearings!!

FYI - there is a tool that pulls the axel through the hub if you can't get the large nut started. Just wanted to add that before the thread ends. Mine came in a Ford tool kit off ebay.
