well i will start off with a little back round. up until this year i always used 6.5 quarts of oil and its 1/2" above the full line. then all of a sudden when i was filling the oil back up from a oil change and added my normal 6.5 quarts it was only at the full line after letting it run for 30 seconds. i have not changed brands or products. the bottle is still the same. and i have always used motorcraft's filter. iirc 320s. the first time it happened my first thought was it being really cold out so the oil in the bottle was thicker than i was used to. there for i was not letting it drain out of the bottle long enough. but this is my 3rd time this year and i always have the same problem. on my oil change today i did as i always do and just let it drain for an hour or more. while i worked on other parts of the car. i currently have 6 3/4 quarts in there and its still just at the full line. i inspected the dip stick and its fine. yes I'm on level ground. (my garage as it always has been). and yes my car is on the ground when adding oil. i honestly don't know whats going on here.

thanks everyone.

EDIT: and i just remembered that the same thing happened to my dads 02 Camry v6. 5 quarts = full, but not anymore.

and boy do i know the 6.5 quart thing has been beat to death. but this is different.

Did you start the car and allow the oil to circulate, then allow it to re-drain for 10 or 15 minutes?

no i did not let it re-drain but i never have. i do know that 6.5 - the oil in the filter comes out when i drain it. because my oil pan can only hold about 6.5 or 7 quarts.

you know what ray i just checked my oil level as the car has been sitting all day and its 1/2" above the full line. so we are good to go. i cant believe i didn't think of that. i feel kind of stupid. thank you.
just kinda odd how i never did that before and it was fine. o well.

Its not stupid...

There are no such things as stupid questions.

There are, however, a TON of VERY inquisitive idiots.

Seriously, though... if YOU didn't ask, someone ELSE wouldn't have known either! Its all good..

Oil level should always be checked on a cold engine. Back in the day of full service gas stations, it was an old trick for the attendant to check the oil and show you the dipstick where the oil level was not to the full line and proceed to try and sell you a quart of oil. :nonono:
