So I took my car in to a local garage to have them figuere out what was making a terrible loud rattling/clanking noise coming from the right rear wheel area. They said its a combination of the following:
1. strut is bad and leaking
2. sway bar link is shot
3. strut mount is shot

They went on to ay that all 4 of each of thoe things also need to be replaced. Should i trust them, or do you think they are trying to rip me off by making me buy a bunch of stuff? Why would a bad strut cause a rattling noise? Woulnt it just squeak?

Any help woul be much appreciated, I just dont have the money to be getting ripped off by these guys

struts usualy are on their last leg by 100K miles, and will make a mild clunking noise once worn out. It is common for the contour rear end to make a clunking noise, this is due to worn out sway bar endlinks and bushings. Chances are replacing that stuff will eliminate 90-99% of your clanking in the rear. BUT, ive also heard of people snapping rear sway bars, which would cause an extremely lound banging noise on bumps.

Basically yes, all of those things would make clunking noises, but it wouldnt be stupidly loud. Depends on how loud your clunking noise is. My best guess is its probably rear sway bar links and bushings combined with blown struts.

i say just replace your sway bar bushings and end links your self. its pretty easy and cheap. and that got rid of my rear end clunk and well as my rear end shimmy over bumps.

If your sway bar link is broken your prolly gonna have to get the Link Welded. or best thing get a reinforced subframe from bradness or B.A.T. Not sure about the other stuff. But a bad Strut mount/strut will cause a clunk I had that happen to my corolla. By the way i have a loud clunk from the back. Its a broken swaybar link. cant wait to replace that stupid rear subframe....

to clarify, its more of a metal on metal noise not really a clunking like you are saying. I'm not sure if that changes what you said
