I'm thinking yes, but am looking for opinions. I pulled my car over our quick lube pit after work tonight to check out a couple things and change the fuel filter. In looking around the tranny, I saw this:

Now, the wetness is some penetrating oil I got on my hands after spraying some bolts, and I couldn't get a decent pic up close to save my life, but the metal seems to be cracked and pushed out a touch. No signs of leaking of any kind. Anyone have any ideas what could cause this?
This pic is about as good as I could get, camera wouldn't focus on anything, this is a bit closer up, looking from the front of the car towards the rear.

Now, on the upside, one of the things I was going to do was tap on my precats to see if they had some loose material inside, but when I looked up....no precats! I freakin have headers, i was so geeked, I took a pic, lol.

Seriously though, if anyone has some good guesses as to what may have caused that spot on the tranny housing, I'd love to hear em.

lol all these years and you never knew you had headers? Or do you have a different car now? Anyways my transmission has some moisture too but nothing's ever come of it. Never seen a weird crack like that but I'd imagine it's going to fail soon. I mean I'm only guessing.

you probably have a broken geartooth that went through that area , that happened on my tranny and i had two spots that look the same and 1 spot broke through the case , the trans still worked but the fluid leaked out , so yeah something is broke inside the trans

pre98, this is a new (to me) car, 00 SVT. I was thinking it looked like something had tried to get out, and now that I think of it, I peeked down into things when I replaced the starter the other day and I did see a lot of knicks and such. Should I drain the fludi and see if I get any shavings out? I planned on changing the fluid out anyways.

If the car is running fine, who's to say its not left over damage from a previous problem that has since been fixed? Maybe something blew and the previous owner had it fixed by a shop who decided it was good enough to reuse the case?

that looks like where the trans meets the engine...nothing behind there that should be putting pressure on the bellhousing....atleast i don't think so. in there is the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate...no fluid or anything. if it is really cracked, i'd say that's the reason it was left that way

my guess is something happened to the trans, it was fixed and the crack was overlooked/not important, if you are that worried about it, get some JB weld or have someone weld a plate on that spot to cover it up/reinforce it.

I saw a similar crack on my buddy's sister's Contour. How it happened is this: My buddy jacked up the front end of the car and placed a jack stand on the front of the subframe (where there is a slight curve). He moved the jack out of the way and was working on a p/s line. The car slipped off of the jackstand and the jackstand ended up under the trans. He ended up having to replace the trans w/ a used one since fluid was coming out. Another possibility is that the car was at the dealership/shop and someone tried pushing up the motor or trans in that spot. Something could have broken inside like some have mentioned.

I wouldn't even worry about it!

From the end of the e in quaife over is all bellhousing.

It looks as though the previous owner really grenaded a clutch!

which means its probably a good sign, shows that the clutch was replaced at one point.

yes , he is correct , i retract my statement about something being broken inside the tranny , as my similiar cracks were further back on the case , sorry if i made you nervous

alright, I just hope there's no loose pieces of something that broke laying in the bottom of the bellhousing. Is there any easy way to check inside the bellhousing, most tranny's I've seen have have a plate you can removed for inspecting things, I don't remember seeing such a thing on our trans...

true...i was drunk posting last night

i wanna know wtf the previous owner did to cause that though! and the aftermath of the clutch lol
