so i am in traffic and i see smoke coming out the engine bay. i smell the coolant that evapurates, and I pull over. no coolant in the system. had some extra in the trunk, so i put all of it in there..started the car to see where it leaked from, and nothing. no leaks...i was like WTF. so then a friend of mine came with lots of water. i filled the sucker all the way up, and started driving it. after 5 miles or so, the temp gauge started going up, so i pulled over...again, no collant/water. i filled it up again, and drove it all the way home. i pulled the water pump out and seemed fine. the imppeler is in one peace, but i alrady bought a new pump so I will be installing it tonight..

what else should I be looking for, at the pump??

i just read that if the pump was dead, the temp gauge will not go up?? is that true?

and btw, i had no heating when i was driving the car back home...my oil is fine, so i know the coolant didn't mix with the oil...just weird..

it sounds like yur either u have a burst hose or a split in a hose, or that yur heads are warped and when it get hot its opening up and yur loosing all yur water from there, what id try is top it up tonight and if yur parking it in yur garage on on yur drive, put newspaper or some kind of big piece of cardboard and leave it there over night if u have a puddle in the morning then it suggest that u have a leak and u can try to look under the car to see where its leaking from, hope its not too bad ...

ok, as i was removing the water pump i saw a cracked hose. got a new one from the stealership, installed the new pump and so far so good. only drove it for a mile or so, but i will test it tomorrow on my way to work. i hope the problem is fixed...

I don't know if just a cracked hose would cause you to loose all your coolant. The crack needs to be a cut or break. You could always put some dye in the coolant to verify exactly where it's coming from. Dye for anti-freeze isn't too expensive. Great way to diagnois.

Dye into the coolant? That's new! I heard putting dye into the AC system but never in the cooling system.

By the way, when the water pump impllers break, the temp gage will go up and if your coolant leaks out it probably wont. The temp gage works much better in liquid than in gas.

got ya...but yeah. you are right. the hose was cut. it was the hose that goes from the top of the pump into the block of the motor. it was cut all the way at the end, on the side facing the motor, so i couldn't really see how bad it was...
