Just changed the oil with mobil 1 fully synthetic

So I just changed the oil in my SVT for the first time since purchasing the car in May with Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic and with a Motorcraft Filter. I put 5 quarts in, and started the car, let it idle for about 30 seconds, checked the stick, and it was almost down past the crosshatched area. WOW! This thing took 6 quarts, and that put it just a little past the fill mark. Is the 5w-30 synthetic coupled with the Motorcraft filter a good mix? Will it offer good protection? or should I have gone with 10w-30? Any questions? I was kinda scared running it at idle with only 5 quarts, but I wanted the oil to get into the filter. and btw....kinda messy job.

I just pour six quarts straight in. Sometimes I add a bit more after it's run. I think it depends on how long I let it sit and drain, but I change so many other cars that it's hard to remember.

I've been using the Mobil 1 0W-40 for 4 or 5 years now. I'm quite happy with it. It's the "European" blend. I change it every 5-7k. I've been thinking about switching to Amsoil 5W-40 and Amsoil filter...

Motorcraft makes a pretty solid filter...much better than the likes of STP or Fram. I've been using the Mobil 1 or K&N oil filters since I switched to synthetic in 2001, many many miles ago.

Do you think running the car for about 30 seconds at idle only! will have been bad on any of the components. keep in mind, the oil was still in the x-hatched area? I just don't want to have caused any stress on the engine :(

I wouldn't worry about it to much .... but FYI the spec is 5.8 quarts of oil so that is why most put in 6 anyway ....

and yes motorcraft filter and Mobil1 is a combination that many use

alot of members on here will tell you to add about 6.5 quarts. thats about 1/2" above full.

reason: oil starvation due to poor oil drain back from the heads. if you would like more info on this i highly recommend searching. you should be able to find tons of threads on this.

I have 6 qts in right now, and its a little past the full mark. You put even more in?? Would running it at idle with the 5qts in give me any problems? I did this so the oil would circulate and enter the filter. once I checked it, it was a bit over the bottom line in the x-hatched area. I love this car, and just want to take good care of it!

no your fine. you were with in the X-hatched zone. the safety zone. and at idle theres nothing bad going to happen. just remember 6 quarts next time. just remember cars have to have a dumb ass zone. lol (no pun intended) that is all...

You could have been running 3 quarts, maybe even 2, and you would have been fine at idle. Don't worry, you didn't hurt anything, I promise!

FWIW, you weren't going to get an accurate reading on the oil level anyway unless you waited a good while for the oil to drain back into the pan. That's why it's the worse time to check your oil versus doing it with a cold engine. At least in this case, "overfilling" by a quart bought the level up to where it should be.

Don't forget that the filter will take a decent amount, which will affect your dipstick reading. You're just fine at 6 quarts even. Leave it alone, and enjoy in good health.

FWIW, you could save yourself some money and run the Motorcraft synthetic blend 5-30 -- it's a great oil, and a 12 pack is less than the price of a sixer of Mobil 1. I ran Mobil 1 for a long, long time, but got tired of paying their prices for negligible gain. Conoco is the supplier of Motorcraft oils -- they're known for the highest quality products.

You can run an engine on surprisingly little oil and still not get any damage. As long as the oil pick up is submerged in oil, the engine will be fine. When it starts to suck in air is when the damage will start. I’ve seen cars down to well below the dipstick and the engine was fine. When I drained the oil, there was not more than a pint left in it. So don’t worry you only ran it on idle for 30 with mroe than enough oil to cause anything! :)

If you want a full synthetic check out Super Tec at all walmart. Good stuff for the price...about the same as conventional oil. Have heard nothing but good things about it.
