Get a cotter pin extractor and yank it out without any drilling.

Exactly. Just break it into little pieces and let them fall through the hole where the bulb is.

I tried every tool cept a cotter pin extractor, and it's a real ***** finding one, home depot couldn't understand what I was saying to them although they had it, I ended up drilling with a small bit which was fine, but for the cotter pins, once you lift it out, how do you break it effectively? using exactly what tool works best?

side cutters.( wire cutters) be careful not to scratch the chrome.

Sears carrys cotter pin extractors in stock.

and yes use dykes to cut them

just your normal wire cutters work great

Anything that is thin enough to fit in and strong enough to break the plastic will work.

I did it 3 times, once using wire cutters, twice using needle nose pliers.
