Wont Shift Into 4th Gear

I have a 95' contour SE with the duratec and an atx. I just did the alternator swap and now it runs/drives great at low to mid speeds. The problem is that it doesn't want to shift into 4th gear. When i drive down the freeway the engine is usually around 3250 rpm and only gets higher when i speed up. It just wont go into 4th. I checked the CEL codes and got 639 (insufficient inpute from the transmission speed sensor) and also 176(HEGO sensor fault/always lean). I'm guessing that it has something to do with the transmission speed sensor but i don't know much about trannys so i could be wrong. Any help or input would be great

well definitively get those sensors checked out or replaced. Other then that, is overdrive off?

probably that speed sensor (or the connection to it), judging by the fact that would cause it to not shift into o/d AND you have a code for it...

let us know what it turns out to be

I didn't know the transmission speed sensor and the turbine shaft speed sensor were the same thing. That explains why i couldn't find it  looks like a nice easy fix though

well i went ahead and switched out the sensor today. It didn't seem to do anything. CEL still comes on with the same codes and still wont shift into 4th. My car is one of the 95s that never got the wiring harness replaced after the recall so it might be a bad connection. does anyone know if theres a way to test the connection to the TSS?

Ohm it at each ends. If the resistance is high, you have a break in the wire. Unplug the PCM connector (below the Power steering reservoir) and the TSS connector. The wire should be White/Pink for the 1995. In addition, at the PCM connector side, it is Pin 5 when you are looking at the connector after unpluggin it. Note that the bottom right is Pin 1 and bottom left is Pin 20. You probably need to splice a wire close to each end of the connectors if there is a break in the wiring.

I am having this same problem with my 98 contour. I will get the codes checked today and also take a look at the sensor. At 65mph the rpms are 3500 and constant....like it gets to 3rd and never reaches 4th, or overdrive never kicks in....

It also violently bumps from gear to gear.

Looked at the TSS yesterday and noticed that the wire had been spliced....soldered it up and works like new. Thanks!

well i finally got around to testing the tss, i just got surgery on my wrist so i couldn't until now.... i checked the ohms and the needle barely moved (its an old tester  ) its like theres barely a connection at all. either i did something wrong or the wiring is completely shot. I just don't want to rip into the wiring unless i'm sure this is the problem

so i did some more testing and i'm almost positive its the wiring, so how do i fix it? How do i know i have to correct wire by the PCM and what kind of wiring do i redo it with?

Start by posting year and engine.

So it turns out that i have almost no reistance from the pcm to the connection for the TSS. pin 5 is the TOP left when looking in the connector, so i retested it and it passed.
