My daughter has a 98 2.5L with an auto. Got 99k on it. She drove it to school and reported that it was no problem. When she got back in it she backed out of her parking spot pulled it into drive and nothing.

OK a little history. When she bought the car, shortly afterwards it started going in and out of gear. Ended up replacing the 7F293 sensor assembly transaxle range. Have done several drain and fills. The thing has been running like a champ, then this.

Guess I'm not using the right words for the FAQ search cause I got nothing. Looking for a direction to go with.

Thanks

Try manual 2nd. Manual 2nd and reverse are direct hydraulic controlled so the TR sensor (correct name) is not in the circuit.

If it still won't go forward in manual 2nd, the tranny has failed internally and you'll need a tow truck.

At a minimum, do a "wiggle" test. Check electrical connectors at the MLPS and at the PCM end.

You should get a real time transmission scan (probably $100 at tranny shop) to get the transmission fault codes. That would tell you more of what the problem is.

Just did the wiggle test and checked the MLPS to see that the lines and marks lined up like they should and yes they did. The cable and linkage connections all look good. If there were any codes wouldn't you have a flashing light showing you that you have some codes that need to be looked at???

I would get a transmission scan if I could get the car to a shop to get it done.

Wonder if I might borrow one?? Anyone here in Houston got one I could borrow???

Now the next question, How hard is the trans to overhaul for someone that has done a fair amount of manuals but no autos??

Did you try manual 2nd or not? If it failed, the tranny's going to need to come out.....

Several members posted their CD4E rebuild experiences on the old forum and included pics.

Yep that was some of the first that I did. You definitely know that it goes into reverse. When you pull it into drive, as one knows their car, you can feel just a slight catch as expected for about the time that it should go into drive. It is very slight but there. Walking it on down through the gears gives you nothing.
In one of the posts that I was reading I looked at a link and in that link the statement was made that with reverse and no drive the drive hub has probably split and not able to contain the pressure.

Well guys,,,, who makes the better overhaul kit????

Probably a cracked forward drum.

Transtec makes about the best kits available. You'll still need to order the hard parts separately.

Also consult TSB 00-18-2 for another strong possibility.
