mondeo and contour gas mileage

I was reading an old mondeo review from an online magazine and it said that the 4 cyl got 40 mpg around town. My contour (zetec auto) has at best gotten 34 mpg on a really long trip, and for some reason lately it has been getting 30 mpg delivering pizzas in a rural area. I know my auto eats some of the mpg, but why does the mondeo do so much better? I could I swap my ecu for a european one and pick up some better mileage?

The UK gallon and the USA one are different sizes.

The UK one is 4.54L per gallon and the USA one (correct me if i am wrong) is 4L per gallon.

That would then work out to around 35mpg for the UK one on your measures. Remembering to the way the measure i.e. urban / extra urban etc will be different too.
