I have a 96 2.5 DOHC auto contour 168k and I have been experiecing some driveability problems (The car hesitates alot when driving). I just scanned the car and 3 codes have been identified. 1.) PO171--Bank 1 system is too lean 2.) PO174---Bank 2 system is too lean and 3.) PO741--Torque Converter--Mechanical system performance. I wanted to know if any of you guys have ran into any of these problems and what would you recommend to fix these problems.

this one is a little scary, the two lean codes, i would first look at your mass air flow sensor and see if the hot wire is dirty. cleaning the hot wire may take care of that. you talk of a hesitation, is it possilbe the atx is slipping or is it a definite engine performance hesitation?, what does the trans oil look like? when the maf hot wire is dirty thos engine will hesitate and will throw those two codes. let us know.

Do you ever get the o/d flashing when you drive? dunno what specifically is wrong but it might help the diagnosis to know.

the 2 lean codes I'd say are probably caused either by the MAF (as mentioned above) or simply unmetered air entering the engine. to test for the latter I believe you spray carb-cleaner around the intake manifold and listen to see if the idle changes any. The fix would probably be a new intake gasket if this is the case.

Welcome. For the P0171 and P0174, you have a massive vacuum loss. Look for a broken hose or try to listen for the sound of air rushing out (in).

As for the P0741, that could be a big tranny problem (torque converter failed) or Powertrain Control Module failed. TSB 02-2-4 has a repair procedure for this code.

I will check for any vacum leaks. As far as the tranny goes, the OD light will start to flash when I'm driving around town. I will keep you guys updated!!

What does this consist of?

I also have a p0171 code at the moment. Since you guys are talking about vacum leak.....you mention 'massive' vacum leak....to get this code to show up how much of a leak will it take....are we talking about little tiny cracks here and there?

LOL. I think I am the one who uses the term massive vacuum leak. I refer to it as a broken vacuum hose or big gaping hole somewhere. When you have a tiny crack here and there, yes, eventually you can get the P0171 and P0174 but it takes time. And with tiny cracks here and there, chances are the two codes will not show up around the same time. What year, engine, tranny and mileage?
