How is this even possible? I sent a front bumper to cruises8 a couple days ago. I made a wooden frame and wrapped it in a mile of bubblewrap. Only took about a day to get to its destination in NH. He picked it up, unwrapped it and found this...

the shipping company didn't mention anything about shipping insurance when i shipped it. theres no way i'll be responsible for this crap. what should i do if they tell me i'm screwed?

Simple, once you start threatening to sue, they settle outside of court :D

Provided you have documented evidence of the way the bumper looked before you shipped it it should be an open and shut case. Plus show the case you shipped the bumper in.

Edit: looking at the picture closer, it looks like the plastic is warped... Who did you use to ship it? It looks like it was put in an extremely hot place, maybe close to the engine of the truck?
 
If you didn't buy extra insurance for it, they aren't going to do jack squat.
UPS and or FedEx both cover up to $100 for free. Anything over that, you aren't getting back. You need to call the shipping company immediately and report it. Both UPS and FedEx have a department that will review your claim and decide if they were liable or if your item was not properly packaged.

Shipping company's do suck... Thats why you always put insurance on it if its over $100 in value. :shrug:
 
Agreed, they shouldn't fight with you too much. Show them the before picture and the after picture and I can't see how they could even try to fight it.
 
I got a claim form sent to me and already faxed it back to the corporate headquarters with a nice long letter. I told them you were addressing this on your end as well. They said it normally takes about 2 weeks for a response. Let me know how it works out on your end.

I don't think it was heated. It looks like it was crushed!

Needless to say, I wasn't too happy.
 
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I still don't understand why neither of you thought to ask the shipper for insurance. :confused: :shrug:
 
It depends.. I used to work at Target and saw some stuff like that come in on a truck.. Depends on what they put on top of it.. Sometimes it doesnt take much... I would definitely make them pay for it though.
 
they didnt offer insurance when i shipped it. the black guy assured me that everything would be okay as it was going in the truck that night and they had a pretty light load going out that way(a million general mills cereal crates)
 
i'll flip **** if i dont get any money back. i have receipts for everything, and proof that the bumper was fine before shipping. theres no way they can deny that they didnt do that

LTL freight claims are nothing at all like freight claims made on, say, a UPS or FedEx shipment. You don't just go out and buy insurance or else you're screwed or anything like that.

There are federal guidelines as to what motor freight is insured for and, depending on what you're shipping, you may or may not be covered very well. It's the lessor amount of either what the actual replacement value OR $25/lb.

So, if you're shipping precious gemstones you're screwed. If you're shipping lead weights, you're covered fully. I'm not sure what the weight of the item you shipped was, but I bet whatever wooden crate you used raised the weight high enough so that you're mostly, if not fully, covered.

If, in the future, you do want additional insurance on a load, it's not generally something that's offered. You must request it and it MUST be noted on the bill of lading. And it's usually not very cheap either. It probably would have cost you upwards of $50.
 
Concidering you had a makeshift crate/box around the bumper, and that the bumper is polyurethane, it looks as if a forklift opperator had let the fork go down onto the bumper to cause it to squish down and tear like it did... i'd tear them a new
