Road trip question VA/NC/SC

The wife and I are planning a trip in our Mazdaspeed from Auburn MA to Greenville SC. So far most people have suggested taking 81 from Scranton PA down. GPS/Mapquest suggests taking 77 South of Blacksburg to Charlotte NC then 85 to 385 out to Greenville.

What about staying on 81 to 26 south to Greenville SC? I'm looking for smooth highway without traffic. I image we will be coming thru this area aroun 6-8pm on a Saturday night.

Oh and we'll be hitting the Dragon from SC on our way to KY.

just a quick reply off the top of my head....

Having made 15 or so trips from Albany, NY to Durham NC, I would ABSOLUTLY recommend taking 81. No traffic, no tolls, no cops.
