ok the other day i was driving arouind and was doing slow dring in 1st and 2nd gear n then i go up to some back roads n pick up speed and make a mild shift into 3rd gear and i hear this lound noise...sounded like a little bit of grinding or something. so then i shift back down to 2nd and go from 2nd to 3rd and the problem contiuned . it only did it from 2nd-3rd gear upshifts. i have no idea what it is. any help on what it may-b or how much it would generaly cost to fix?

ouch

Sounds like a syncro in the tranny is going out...i would say this would be in the 400$+ range. if you shift (clutch pushed in) to 4th before 3rd does it make the same noise?

Definatly the 3rd gear syncro. This requires a complete teardown of the tranny and such though. You can still drive with a bad syncro but it would be advised to get it fixed.

Also since you will be taking it all apart anyways possibly, you should upgrade the shift forks and put in a torsen or quafe if you have the funds.

Trust me on the torsen, i blew up my tranny and did these upgrades. Best thing i ever did, shifts smooth as silk and i love having power all the time with the torsen in corners.

A loud noise? My synchros are getting a little tired but I only feel a little vibration in the stick with virtually no noise what-so-ever. This is with a cold MTX. After it's warm, 3rd gear shifts are fine. I might add that since I put in the Ford MTX fluid, the 3rd year problem doesn't seem so evident anymore. If this just started happening out of the blue, you probably have another problem. Synchros get progressively worse over time usually. Even when I had cold MTX fluid syndrome, my second gear crunch never made a loud noise. Of course, loud is a subjective term. Maybe you just mean "audible?"
