Hi , hope somebody can help me with this....

There is a slight ticking noise coming from the left side of the engine bay, cant tell from where though. The Ticking increases in speed as I accelerate.

Mechanic recommends adding Lucas when I get my next oil change.

Its a 98 SE. 123,000 kms I use Mobil 1 for oil changes.

Anybody else had this problem? Or know what it could be?

Thanks

What is the tick like? Does it sound airy and hollow or is it like a midget in the engine bay with a pick-axe hammering on your transmission?

It sounds more like the pick axe analogy.....

ide: tick, tick, tick, tick,

accelerate: tickticktickticktick (really fast)

I take it that it's RPM dependant and not vehicle speed dependant?

High pitched tick (like banging two spoons together) or low pitched 'clunk'.

If high pitched, I would go with exhaust leak as stated (rusted through pipe, bad gasket, something) if it's more solid I would say main bearing or possible cracked flexplate (if your auto)

Just tossing out ideas for ya more than anything I guess, lol.

Yes it is RPM dependant...

its more high pitched, its not loud though....like two parts are slightly hitting each other

As best as I can guess from over the internet, I would go with exhaust leak. Look around at connections and under the car if you can. Carbon will have built up so it should be 'fairly' easy to spot. Especially if it does it while at idle, should be able to poke around and narrow down the source.

Also if you cant seem to see anything but have a good idea where its coming from you can you a "mechanics stethoscope". Just grab a decent lenght (2-3 feet) of heater hose and put one end right up to your ear and put the other end right up next to the joint/area you want to listen to. If you go over an exhaust leak you will notice a very differnent sound than if you are over a sealed point.

THats a pretty good idea ^^^^. I was thinking to mention the whole 'flag on a pole' thing to where leaking exhaust would make the little flag blow around... but your method sounds a bit more, sound.
