ok so my exhaust manifold is leaking. i first noticed it just over a week ago, and it was barely noticeable, i could only hear it with an echo off a wall or a fence. then a few days ago, i could hear the echo off passing cars. now i can hear it mumbling thru my dash. *sigh* its getting worse. i wish i could pinpoint exactly WHERE it was leaking but i didnt have time, nor did i wanna rip anything apart to find the stupid thing. but this is where my question comes in...today i was parked waiting to pick someone up. it was a short drive there, and my temp gauge had just reached the R. i sat for about five mins with the car running, and the needle kept climbing all the way to L! then my fan kicked in and it dropped. i was rather concerned. it was not that warm out and it was raining...and my hood was steaming bcuz it was so hot. all the rain falling on my hood was just boiling away pretty much. im presuming this is a direct result of my leak, so is this something i should be very concerned about and get taken care of immediately? im a poor college kid and really could use with saving my money for at least another month. i have a summer class to pay out of my a$$ for :blackeye:

o i KNOW they run hot. but i mean, i was PARKED and my temp gauge flew to the L in mere minutes. that has never come close to happening. the only other times ive gotten to L were in the summertime, when its 70 degrees at LEAST. it was only 50 today...

*sigh*

search search search.

Its all over the zetec forums too. Every single pre98 zetec is exactly like that, they did that right from the factory. Ford put an extremely sensitive sending unit into the Ford Contour, How many cars have you driven that the temperature gauge more that much in that short amount of time? It seems almost physically impossible.

My old 96 did the exact same thing if you sat at a dead stand still, temp gauge would rise to L, cooling fans would kick on. I can promise you that if you turn on the A/C, which makes the cooling fans run all of the time, the engine will never go past half way up the temperature gauge. My old contour was this way, a friend of mine at school who had a pre98 zetec was this way, a guy I know here on campus at school's pre98 is way, its normal. Especially when parked, when your car is in motion, when the motor is revving up and you are going say 40 miles an hour, there is 1) a source of wind blowing at the radiator, which is exactly what the cooling fan does, except wind does it better, and two since your engine isn't at idle speed the water pump is spinning faster, so there is better circulation of the coolant, this causes increased cooling efficiency. Your cooling fans are programmed to come on at a preset safe temperature to assist the cooling system in dropping the temperature to an even safer level. I personally think ford saw this "issue" when the car rolled off the line, and to compensate, instead of putting a different sensor in, they decided to make the gauge in the cluster read "NORMAL" so that people would be like "Oh, its normal for it to do that" then they fixed it in the 98+ models so they didnt bother with printing that on the gauge.

If you are THAT worried about it, go zxtuner.com and get a 165 degree thermostat, your cooling fans will probably never turn on, Just make sure to not leave it in during the winter, or your engine will never reach normal operating temperatures.

As for your exhaust leak, if you have one, I am sorry to hear that. But unless you have a welder or a cracked exhaust manifold, there is nothing we can suggest to fix your problem around here. Your best bet is to find a reputible exhaust shop around your home town, take it there and say "I think I have an exhaust leak, please fix it" and if its as minor as you claim it to be, they probably will have the problem found and fixed in under a half an hour.

well, no one said it was minor haha. im just wondering if its something i should be taking absolutely seriously. my muffler disintegrated during the winter last year and i didnt bother with that for three months lol. on the flip side, i broke a suspension coil (luckily it didnt pop out of the mount) and i got that taken care of a few days later. im just trying to detail what is actually happening here...if i get the time this weekend maybe i'll dig down and maybe see if there is anything visible thats cracked or anything. i mean is this something i could drive around with under reasonably safe conditions for a month or a bit longer??

an exhaust leak? nah, it will just be annoying as piss until you fix it.

ok i was just concerned cuz i know the exhaust is hot as HE!! and i wouldnt want that to have any adverse affects or anything. i can deal with the sound tho. i drive thru the city all the time. i totally fit in  HAHAHA

I drove an old car I had for 3 years with a cracked manifold that was about 1 foot away from the head. I didn't care about the car, but it survived that whole time.

Infact, I never changed the oil either.. that thing was a tank. :) I love $100 beaters.

If you take alias's advice about a lower temp thermostat, don't get a 165. Get a 180.

And the exhaust leak ain't gonna harm anything. Take it to a muffler shop and see if they can find it and show it to you. The only leak I've seen on a zetec was at the flex pipe, which you can find a shop to put a new one on for a decent price. Run away from the ones that try to sell you a whole manifold, cat, flex assembly if turns out just to be the flex pipe.

i dont think its my flex pipe. its coming from right near the top of the engine, but i cant see exactly cuz my air filter is in the way  . and im lazy and i dont feel like taking it apart right now. and im too busy, with school and all. my mechanic is going to check it out and see if he can find out where it is this week sometime. and if its something really expensive to fix im not gonna bother with it for awhile.

This high temp. issue also happens with Duratecs. When I am Parked or in Stop and Go traffic, the temperature goes to M-A (very soon) and then the fans kick in. Also make sure the coolant is not low or weak.
