I'm coming up to Idaho and Montana to look at property next month. I'm looking for a ranch or small farm - at least 10 acres or bigger. Where should I begin my search? I don't want to be near any big cities if possible but realize that I'll have to go shopping several times a month. Obviously price is important but I'll have between $200K - $300K to spend. It would be nice to have a barn or workshop for the toys but I'll build one if I have to. I'm looking on the internet but you don't necessarily learn how "nice" an area is without going in person. I realize some of the more rural areas may not have paved roads and I'm not looking for vacant property to build on. What say you residents?

Well, I don't know Idaho all that well, but I know here in OR you could find what you're looking for in Dufur, Maupin, Wasco, and pretty much any "town" in Wasco Co. or Sherman Co. If want a little more mountains, search near Baker City, OR (about 1.5 hrs from Boise) - it's beautiful out there.

Agree that Oregon is a nice area. I'm not too hip on the "can't pump your own gas" deal they have there though. And the Columbia River is a plus if you have a boat. If Oregon passes my "no stupid car and gun laws" requirment, I'll put it on my list.

I lived in western Montana for several years. They're not too fond of Californians. Might want to change your license plates ASAP.

Yeah.. I stopped in outside Portland and starting trying to pump my own gas and the guy came running over.

And they didn't take credit cards? WTF

What kind of terrain do you want? Hills, mountains, plains, forest, rocks. Different areas have different stuff. Try to stay out of Washington, they like to tax you for everything. I hear they are trying to figure out how to tax us on breathing.

Thanks for all the responses. As for the type of terrain, I'm looking for a farm or ranch. I'm not planning on punching cattle or raising horses but maybe just growing some crops. I've lived in the "big city" all my life and want to get out into the country before it all disappears. So, it probably doesn't matter a whole lot what the terrain is like except that the land needs to be able to support plantlife. What I've noticed so far though, at least in Montana, is that there are a lot of pre-fabbed houses which wouldn't be my first choice. I set up some criteria on a search site for real estate and got a few hits in Montana, none in Oregon or Idaho. My other area of interest is the Southeast and I got a lot of "hits" in the Kentucky and Tennessee areas that I searched. That may have to be where I consentrate my attention. As a life long Californian, I realize what many folks in other states think of us and the reasons behind those thoughts. I'm not one to try and change the place I move to into another California. I'd just stay here if I wanted that. It's true that California has just about anything anyone would want regarding weather and things to do. I just don't think that those things are important anymore.

Check out Great Falls, MT. It's off the interstate a ways so everything is much cheaper. Nice place too.

Also check out Salmon, ID. Same deal, absolutely beautiful area.
