I've had my '95 2.0l contour for a year and have never figured this out. Bought it with 107k miles and immediately put in new plugs, wires, air/fuel filters, iac, egr valve, dpfe, cleaned the tb, probably did a couple other things to get it running in top shape. It runs great, and idles smoothly in drive for the first few minutes.

But at some point it starts to idle at lower rpms, which causes sever shaking of the dashboard and (lately) some belt slippage which makes a loud embarassing squeal at stoplights. I've searched a lot on this and several people have the problem, however note that this does not happen at initial start up.

I have no CEL codes.

Because I have no codes and it is otherwise well-tuned, I don't know what else to do. Somewhere a computer reflash was recommended (called the dealer and they quoted $100) but I do not want to just throw money at guesses.

Does anyone have am idea how to fix this? Thanks.

Is it worse when in D and not as bad when in P or N? If yes, then you are looking at a broken engine/tranny mount.

How does a tranny mount "fix itself" when its first started, then get broken after a few minutes of driving?

I have no idea. Magic? I hate you, Ray!

Oh, something I missed (thank you, Ray:o ). How old is the battery, serp belt and tensioner?

you may also check the crank pulley and see if it wobbles alot. mine does do to a brocken crankshaft key so the pulley wobbles. this caused alot of belt squeel and it may even cause some shaking if its bad enough.

The belt and battery are new, but the tensioner is old. But the real problem here is the rpm level at idle while in drive (when its in park its fine). Once the car warms up the rpms drop too low when in drive and I'm at a stop. I realize the shaking may be due to many things, but it never shakes or squeals in the first few minutes, when the car's computer-control seems to keep the rpms at a normal level. Something is causing the rpms to drop at idle, in drive. No idea what though.
