Ok, here goes.

Have a 96 v6 2.5L engine, recently had oxygen sensor replaced and then a p0420 code. The firewall side cat seems to be going. My mechanic said its ok to drive for now.

I bought some STP fuel injector cleaner and put in tank of gas and then filled up tank.

Have only drive a few kilometers since and now the temperature gage goes into red and the car sounds like a plane engine. Very loud fan type noise.

Car seems to run ok which is strange. Any suggestions?

Your waterpump impeller could have shattered, meaning you need a new waterpump. If you really let your car go into the Red Hot zone, you may need a whole lot more than a waterpump though! :help: !!!

What would have caused that? And yes it was in red zone but not for long. Maybe 5 mins to get home or so. Would that have really caused sever damage?

What is the estimated cost of getting this work done at mechanic. I unfortunately dont know much about cars, other than to drive them.

yes just that little time could have done alot of damage. anytime your temp gage goes near red you need to shut the car off and wait for it to cool down.

Thankyou for your help. I am getting frustrated with this car. It was great up until about a month or two ago. I have had the intake manifold gaskets replaced, the o2 sensor replaced. then a p0420 code which apparently I need a firewall side catalytic and now the waterpump.

I will see how much it will cost and hopefully not damage was done, otherwise this might be the end of the road for mine.

That noise was the two speed cooling fans running full speed trying to cool off the engine. The early model 95-97 cars came with a black plastic impeller that can shatter or just slighty crack then slips on the shaft so it doesn't push any coolant through the engine. Let us know if it is the original (black impellor), later version plastic ones are biege. That is pretty high mileage for one of those to last.
Mine broke at 61,000.

You guys are all great help here. Thanks CEG!

The car seems ok even though running it up to red for a few minutes. I drove it to shop Friday morning which is very close to me and the temperature and driving was fine. I explained the temperature and problem to the mechanic.

It was indeed the waterpump empeller. I had a new metal waterpump installed instead of the plastic one, new termostat, new water pump belt, and of course the fluid change. Drove the car after picking it up and everything seemed like new, well that is new for a 195,000 kms car!

Yes it was the original black plastic empeller. It hadnt disinigrated but it had a big crack in it. So it may have been working slightly which saved the engine, but definately wasnt doing very much.

Anyways thanks to everyone who responded! Now I just need to fix my p0420 code which sometimes shows up.
