i have a 99 contour svt and when i'm driving there is a very noticable grinding/rubbing noise it sounds like it's my brakes and it sounds like its coming from the front somewhere, before this it made a sqeaking noise everytime i turned left it sqeak sqeak sqeak, like it was my brakes. but i checked them out (with the tire on) and the pads and rotors apear to be in good condition my rears look like crap but the fronts are good, i have drilled rotors in the front and back...i dont wanna buy new brakes if thats not it so if anyone has another idea let me know.

a squeak? lol the grinding sounds like the problem i had with my loose brake caliper, it would hit my wheel. but i had more of a clunking than a squeaking, it was a vicious sound. im very sure ur problem is not ur pads/rotors. something else is hitting ur wheel most likely. have someone turn ur wheel while ur looking towards the inside of ur wheel, and u might find something (like ur caliper for instance) coming very close to, if not touching, it.

I had a similar noise in the RF of my car. I first thought it was the brakes. I rebuilt the calipers. (Cheap @ $5. per kit) I replaced the rotors. (Not so cheap) And I still had the noise.

I finally replaced the wheel bearing. It didn't look bad but the noise went away and the slight shimmy I had as well. I plan on replacing the other side just because!

I'll do the LCAs as well as I had to damage the boot on the ball joint to split it and I found the ball joint loose as well. I know the ball joint boot on the other side is bad as I damaged it when I replaced the struts last fall.

it's weird if it's a wheel bearing it's the strangest wheel bearing noise i have ever heard, plus i just replaced that wheel bearing not to long ago 6 months maybe. but i replaced the rotors and pads and the noise is still there. it makes kind of a wrenching noise, not a constant grind or howl like a wheel bearing makes. but maybe it is. if it is that would suck there a B**** to do, im gonna bring it in to the ford dealer and see what they think.

well i would agree with you that it is not a wheel bearing, but i do have a question...does it sound like something thats coming from the wheels? or does it occur with the frequency of the engine?

well i dont know, when i was looking at it it seemed like the boot on the halfshaft was in great cond. so it's not that either...argh this is driving me crazy!

Where are you located? Post in the local forums to see if a local CEGer can check it out for you. Sometimes, a different set of ears (eyes) can help tremendously with car diagnosis.
