P0420-Catalyst system efficiency for bank 1

Got this code after having my oxygen sensor changed. Been reading alot about it on this site and my mechanic did a thorough job of checking with scan to verify my firewall catalytic is not functioning well.

I have search on here and notice some people putting headers on without the cats and also noticed some aftermarkets available out there.

Has anyone used any of the aftermarket replacement cats.

Also notice someone on the expired board saying they used berrymans b12 and it seemed to rid the problem. Unfortunately that doesnt seem available in Canada. Will any injector cleaner do the same thing?
 
Has anyone who's owned a V6 contour not had this code come up?

Try doing a UIM/Lim rebuild and run a good fuel injector cleaner every other fillup for a couple of months before you replace anything else. That seemed to cure my 0420 code.

If your pre cat is shot just get some MSDS headers and MIL eliminators.
 
This code is a common problem and one that I have right now on my 1998 SVT. I recommend you do a search of the Duratec maintenance forum and general troubleshooting forum for code P0420 for other information and opinions. I would recommend a UIM and throttle body cleaning before doing a rebuild.

On you questions of injector cleaner, any brand name will work. Most people seem to think Berryman's is one of the better ones, but using someone's is better than doing nothing.
