Next car to buy

Very nice car Jeff. What do you get for gas mileage on that thing?

The primary reason for my not owning one is A) Insurance (which may be cheaper then I thought), B) I don't want car payments so I'll be paying in full, C) I have more important things in my life right now that I need to pay for (getting married for one), D) Not a practical car for me right now.

Geez, your full coverage is less than what I am going to be paying on the SVT. $394 for full coverage for 6 months.

I'm in my 40s, so that may influence the insurance rates. Also, I don't remember if Safeco had a lower rate for driving less miles but I plan to average around 2,000 miles per year. Plus, no tickets in the past 5 years.

A warning about low priced Vipers. If you see one listed for much below $40k be very careful. Most likely it is either high mileage with lots of wear or something is wrong with it. Vipers tend to hold their value pretty well. In comparison, my '98 Mystique is probably worth around 10% of what I bought it for new.

I just saw a red viper in St. Paul today, very nice and like you said they are one in a hundred compared to vettes.

What are repair prices like for the viper? If a turbo kits running 12k I dont want to know what repair prices are like. But if the repair prices are nominal, than a higher mileage viper that needs love might not be a bad move either...

Well what do you consider lower priced? All the Vipers I've seen have less then 40k on them and are going for high 20's low 30's.

It was sunny out today, but isn't there still some salt and dirt on your roads down there? And what crazy SOB would take it out when it is only 40 degrees out. Then again a guy in Duluth had what looked like a brand new Farrarri out when it was nice out in Feb. Ugggggg. Retards.

A list price like that would definitely raise my suspicions. Is that an older Gen I (1992-1995) with no glass side windows and various other things that were added over the years? Does the front fascia have lots of scrapes and are there rock chips all over the front, etc.? Has the car been meticulously maintained? You can easily tell if a car has been serviced with loving care by looking at the brake fluid reservoir and seeing if it is light or dark and dirty.

On the maintenance costs, a lot depends on what type of driving you do. Obviously, a car driven hard on the track is going to require more maintenance than one just used for cruising around town. The rear tires are WIDE at 335/30-18 and cost around $400 each. A complete set of tires can run $1,400-$1,600. The $12.5k turbo kit I mentioned from SVS is a complete twin turbo package. Adding nitrous or a SC is a much cheaper option but you’re not going to see close to 1000 hp with those.

Someone asked about mileage. I don’t drive as aggressively as some but on local roads I get 12 mpg. On the highway in 6th gear, nearly idling at 1500 rpm at 75-80 mph I’ve gotten 21 mpg.

It was downtown by the Excel Energy Center and the roads are pretty clean, not perfect, but clean enough.
