I just bought a 96 mystique with the 2.5 and a 5 spd 128k miles. I looked for info on wether the car has a timing belt or chain, but I couldnt find anything, so I would like to know
I also searched for information about crank pulleys. The crank pulley I noticed wobbles at low rpm, until about 2k then it doesnt wobble as much. Is this considered crank whip? I also read that some people replace these pulleys with the DMD ones from the 3.0l. Is this a common thing to replace?

Thanks, thats a good thing to know.
Does anyone know anything about the crank pulley? I am registering it this weekend, I need to know so I can order the new pulley and put it on.

Anyone have some info on the pulley and will it solve my problem?
Ubnpast, the damper on your engine has basically two cast iron sections with rubber in between and held together by strong glue. The inner section attaches to the crankshaft. The outer section is a pulley for the drive belt but is also tuned to be a specific mass to damp out engine vibrations of a certain frequency range. Either the pulley was manufactured incorrectly or the bond is starting to separate (it is 11+ years old). I've seen both but most commonly the latter. The consequences of this outer ring separating is drive belt wear and in the worst case the ring flying off and causing damage.

The DMD or dual mass damper is just that...it has two outer rings to dampen vibrations in two different freq. ranges. The DMD does increase the smoothness of the engine although some people don't really notice it. If it didn't make a difference then Ford and others would never take the significant additional cost that it actually is. It will not affect the power that your engine delivers although it can make it fractionally less quick to rev. No different than a slightly heavier flywheel.
Note: if you do install one, you may notice a slight amount of wobble in the front mass. This is ok and I've seen it from time to time on the DMDs. What's important is that the mass with the v-belt grooves runs true.

Will this wobble be the same thing that I am having? When I get a chance I have tp take a closer look at it, just seems like it is wobbling from side to side and the belt is also following it which is what made me see it in the first place.
Its kind of strange to have it wobble when idling, but anything higher in RPMs and it becomes alot less noticable.
