Alternator Problems

I was wondering if anyone on here knows if there is a fuse able link on the main power cable that goes from the battery to the starter then to the alternator. The car will start and run but the battery doesn't charge. When running there is power at the positive post on the alternator, but the voltage at the battery is still below 12 volts. So I am guess that either the entire cable is bad or there is some kind of fuse able link in it. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, there is.

Read the "alternator how-to" in the Duratec Maintenance forum, under the "read me first" thread. It outlines the "Mega-Fuse" location and access instructions.

Hahaha "putting out"? no.. it should be a regulated 13.2-14.0 volts DC.

The voltage regulator likely failed, cause the alternator to output is max voltage, and popped the fuse. Is your megafuse blown, afterall? If so, I wouldn't simply replace it.

I'd verify voltage regulator operatoin, or replace the alternator (use the how to in Duratec Maintenance's "read me first" thread)

I just replaced the alternator. The new one is putting out 40 volts at the alternator but none of that is getting to the battery. So I am guessing that when i put this one it it fried my fuse.

Sounds like the megafuse. The alternator is set up to sense the voltage at the battery and regulate that to 14.7 V. If the megafuse is open the regulator will keep raising the voltage trying to raise the battery voltage but it can't because of the open fuse. The megafuse is located behind the engine below the rear coil pack.

I pulled the mega fuse out and it sounds like a babies rattle. Do they carry these at an auto parts store?
