Is there a way to remove the factory head unit without the special DIN tool?

I got my mystique's radio out using two bent coathanger pieces, but no matter what I tried it didn't work on my sister's car, so I just went to Wal-Mart and bought the tools, they worked much better.

Are these little holes that are around the radio... My girl friend has an 98 Escort ZX2 with the all in one heater/ stock radio, she would like to go aftermarket, but i cant figure out how to get the panel out..

Yes. The four holes are what you need to stick the coat hanger/allen wrench/small nails/DIN tool in. The DIN tool has little notches on the ends that latch in and allow you to use them to pull the unit. Still, just find something that will fit in the holes, then grab around the edges and pull.

:troutslap: Duh. I completely misread his post! :nonono:

I think you were still right. IIRC the Escort's oval panel still has the din-tool-sized holes on each side, I'd try that first.
