My car (98 contour gl) hesistates constantly during acceleration. My guess is that it's the IMRC but I haven't gotten around to driving with it unplugged. If it's not that, I would love some idea of what it could be. The other thing is at just about ever stop, the car's rpm's drop down to under 1000 and 90% of the time winds up stalling if I don't keep my foot on the gas pedal at least a little. I am at a loss as to what this issue could be. Help!!

Thanks
Jacquie

I take it you have a V6 and MTX? It could be the IAC valve. Your check engine light is probably on. You should take it to Mistertransmission. I think they provide free reading of CEL codes. www.mistertransmission.com. Then post the exact codes here.

Yes, it's a V6 and MTX. The only thing is I just replaced my IAC in the fall. And my engine light is NOT on, which is the thing that screws me up the most. I have no idea what would cause this issue and not trigger the engine light. But thanks for the tip about the code readings!

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? In addition, try putting a bottle of HEET in the fuel tank.

Miles? What repairs have been performed on it?

Sometimes a simple Spark plugs and wires change can fix this issue. But you need to use the proper spark plugs and wires, I wouldnt put anything but Motorcraft/Autolite spark plugs in a contour, you as just asking for problems that way.

What is HEET?

Wesley

HEET is an alcohol product that removes water from the gas lines. Whenever it's cold outside, even with everything working properly, your gas and tank will heat up while driving, then freeze the condensation when parked. The next time you start it, the water will get sloshed by the gas back into the fuel line, causing hesitation and maybe even stalling.
If you somehow can't find HEET or a similar product, I've been using bottles of 91% Isoprophyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol) from the pharamacy section at WalMart for a few years, and it works just as well
