Heading into the big city tomorrow for an interview. One of my "personal" clients that i do work for put in the good word for me at this big court reporting company.

If I get the job i'd be supporting top level attorneys from what i gather.

Though i'm sure they're gonna do the standard offer of 35k/year and i'm not sure i can withstand a $150+ a week pay cut...i mean it'd probably even out cause i'd actually get a return, but i dunno. Job does include health benefits though, which i don't have now, plus all that 401k stuff too...and i'd actually have some worthwhile stuff on my resume.

Anyway i figure i'll atleast show my face and see if something can be worked out.

I could always keep doing computers on the side locally...but i'd have to get more customers - and then i'd have to find time to take care of them since i wouldn't even be getting back onto the island until after 6pm...i hate making life changing decisions. :blackeye:

Good luck. And the healthcare issue could more than make up for the lower pay, one ER visit alone could cost you thousands. Just something to consider.

Yeah well i guess i'm taking my health for granted.

But still, taking the pay cut would really kill me. I mean, i need the money...and i'd rather have it in my pocket then invest it in the possibility that i might get sick.

A pretty cool thing is they offer a retirement plan that i wouldn't have to pay into. it's all paid by the company. which i've never even heard of lol!

Anyway, it all went really well. I really liked gettin' all spiffy and hopping on the express bus with all the "important" people. Nice place, nice people...nice change of pace. It's a small company so there's only like 10 people. Their work day sounds like a vacation compared to my average day. The guys they have there doing the computer work have just been there from the very beginning...so they know what they know and that's it. As far as computer experience goes they love me. Other that than i'd be doing "production" work. Converting the transcripts that the stenographers take to usable formats...encoding video records of depositions and stuff like that. And also traveling (company paid for!) to other places where depositions are going on to make sure the stenographers computer is communicating properly with the other machines they have that convert and display what he/she types. Pretty interesting stuff actually.

So the lady offered me like $33k. I explained my situation to her and told her pretty much what i'd need to take home every week to make this possible. So i need to get in touch with my accountant so he can calculate all the tax stuff. She's going to do the same. She said theres "wiggle" room so i shouldn't be afraid to talk to her about it.

Considering what they start at and the guy leaving has been there like 7 or more years...he's probably making upwards of 60k, so they'd still be saving money with what i'm asking for.

We'll see what happens i guess.

So the woman asked me to call her back after i talked to my accountant. I called back this afternoon. She officially offered my 33k yesterday. My accountant told me to maintain the same take home pay as i do now, i'd have to earn like 45k a year. The lady almost had a heart attack when i told her this. She then said the highest she could go was like 36k.

This isn't the first time this has happened, and it won't be the last i'm sure. She made it a point to let me know that she really couldn't go any higher than the 36k, and i made it a point to let her know that i understand but if that's the case i simply can't afford to cut my pay in half.

She said she felt i could be a "valuable addition to the team," and I agree. She told me to think about it and she'd leave it up to me to contact her back. I'm probably going to email her late tonight or tomorrow and officially tell her no, and also tell her that I feel i could introduce more efficient ways for them to do things...even do in house some of the things they currently outsource (converting/encoding video, video conference...etc).

If she can't do it, she cant. But regardless she's not gonna find someone as qualified as me for less than $60k. The guys that are there know what they need to get by but that's it.

Makes me wish i stayed in school...

Chris, what kind of position are you looking for? I am pretty certain my place is looking for a Jr. Network guy and I think it pays $45-60k. I'm not 100% sure about the money, so don't shoot me if I'm wrong.

I guess something along those lines. Basically what i do now is maintain/support networks for businesses on staten island, and in brooklyn, nj...even had several contracts in the city at one point.

They all have the same thing in common, in that they have a need for someone to support their networks and keep them up and running, but don't need or can't afford to employ someone on a full time basis to do only that.

It's more than "just" networking though. I do work for companies that do everything form real estate to medical/medical billing to food service to mortgages. They've all got software they use for accounting, appointments, loans, even table reservations. I install it, figure out how it works, show them, etc.

I have experience with corporate antivirus (mostly NAV) and several backup programs that i use. Mostly veritas and i like to use acronis to keep working images of machines.

Hell, i even do cat 5 and CCTV wiring.
