Hey All,

Here's the dilema, Monday morning I'm driving on the highway at about 80-90 and I realize my car tranny isn't upshifting to OD like it should be at that speed. So, I look down to find that my speedo isn't working, the tach/fuel/temp appear to be fine. Then when I got off the highway at my exit I stopped and everything downshifted fine. When I went to pull away from the stoplight the car didn't want to shift into second and when it did it was very rough...and when I say rough I mean violent enough to cause my muffler to shake and 'thud' against the underside of my car. At this point I've tried nothing to fix it but I'm about to put in my other speedo from the tach equipped guage cluster I bougth some time ago. This speedo is the original speedo that came in the car only it is installed in a different cluster.

So, I've tried swapping in a different speedo with no result so the guage isn't the problem. Everything else in the car works fine, as far as I can tell anyway. I just replaced the TSS(Turbine Speed Sensor)and still nothing. When I first went to the dealer I asked for a Speed Sensor and the guy gave me another part that had a small prong that could freely spin, however that doesn't match the TSS at all. Any thoughts? All fuses are good and all connections appear okay upon inspection. Also, I had a CEL on Monday when the tranny started shifting hard and that hasn't come back since I reset the EEC. If it does I can pull that code and maybe go from there. I'm out of ideas...anybody else?! Thanks in advance!!

You want the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) not the TSS(Turbine Shaft Speed) sensor. Latter is engine input to atx, former is output to wheels (simplified expl.).

So I should try the other sensor I got originally? Do you know, off hand, where the VSS is located? My ford CD-ROM wasn't much help, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

Exact same thing happend to me 2 months ago on my 95 mystique. The Speedo cable broke in half and screwed up my speed sensor. Bought the parts from the dealer (speedo cable and VSS) tried to do it myself, but I was unable to get the vss out of the tranny. Took it back to the dealer, all in all I spent close to $200 to get that stupid thing fixed. works great now.

The same exact thing happened to me in Feb. The speed sensor was locked up and the drive pin was broken. Both were replaced and the problem was fixed.

Interesting, you guys both have pre98 and the VSS just recently failed. I have a 98.5 and it went?! I wonder if it has something to do with the new tranny I had to buy. Maybe a problem came about before the old tranny died and the VSS has been slowly wearing away? I dunno, well thanks to all...hopefully I'll have time over the next couple of days to pull the VSS and check it out.

Peace
