I just ordered an IBM 1Gig "Microdrive" from "Newegg" for $270. with FREE shipping.
Since the 512Mb 'solidstate' is around $220. and the IBM is faster, the IBM is (Retail on IBM is about $450) moneywise the best deal...
Read on in the link below and they liked the IMB at $380+ price/performance ratio... at $270. it's below $0.26 per gig.

beware, of microdrives. I love them a lot but they are not compatible with all cameras.

As far as best companies, pretty much companies that make decent ram tend to make decent cf cards; PNY, Kingston etc etc. Sandisk is fairly good as well, just steer clear of the 'house brand'

I trusted Iomega since they make everything else related to data storage. it was only about $10 more than the house brand, so I figured I couldn't go wrong.

I think Sandisk is kind of the industry standard, it seems everybody carries them. I'd just trust your judgement, if you have heard of the brand before, I'd go for it.

Now that CF is firmly established, there are 2x, 4x, 8x and 16x versions now, supposed to give better data throughput (camera willing).

I'd stick to the Sandisk high speed ones, or Lexar Pro ones.

Here's a good site for a comparison of CF cards.

Seeing as how we've got the same camera IIRC , I'll chime in ...
I've got SanDisk cards for mine , an 8mb & a 32mb . Lotsa storage there smile . Although , thinking back on it , I should've ponied up the wampum for the 64mb card wink . I've also got the SanDisk "reader" , so I don't have to run the pics through the camera (pretty slick) .

Y2k Mondeo, 8Mb and 32MB? That won't hold 50 pictures and I only have a 2MP camera.

Antonio,

Stay far away from Sandisk and the regular Lexar cards, even the 12x ones. They are very slow and expensive unless there is some hot deal with rebates locally. Still not worth much IMO if the yare so slow.

Take a look at the comparison Kerrychin linked. Kingston and Viking are the best values and very fast for Type I CF. Check out www.buy.com and www.amazon.com for excellent prices. I first had a generic Mr. Flash 128MB card from Newegg, but is was painfully slow with my camera. Then I picked up a 256MB Kingston and the speed is back.

FWIW, check here for batteries if you need some.

How many pics you get really depends on which setting you use . I don't use the max setting very much at all (HUGE pics) . There's really no reason for me to use that setting . I mainly use the middle and normal settings . If it's set on "normal" , I can get over 300 pics ... that's quite a pile of pics eek (on my 2.1 mp camera) !!
I 'm not really sure what you mean by slow , mine's about instant confused . As for price , I bought my 32MB card for about $30 (regular price) at Best buy . That's not too badly priced (and I'm cheap wink laugh ) . I've had ZERO problems with my SanDisk cards , with HUNDREDS of pics taken .
