Should there be any sort of a visible power difference between the E0 Svt and the E1? I know the E1 has virtually 5 more hp, but how much of that actually reaches the wheels. My friend has an E1 and I have an E0, he's completely stock, my car has lowering springs and an intake yet he still thinks I can't keep up with him. In order to end this debate once and for all, I'm turning this over to public scrutiny and the expertise of the CEGers. -Alex

Not every car dynoes the same and just because its advertised at 195 or 200 hp doesnt mean thats what its going to dyno at. It could be above or below that. Ive seen 2000 svts dyno in the 150-160 whp range modded, yet ive seen 98s dyno in the lower 180s with similar mods. 5 hp isnt really going to make that much of a difference.

Additionally, the E1 (a 1998.5 Contour) has 195 horsepower, the same as the E0. It didn't get more until 1999 ... unless the main site FAQs are wrong ... so your friend has nothing even to gloat over.

Ive got the modded E0 98 CSVT while my brother has the modded E1 CSVT. Both same brand and type aftermarket mufflers and CAIs. We both in the past raced a bit before and I have beat him by a car and half distance ahead of him but again not THAT much difference though. I guess it also depends how well you taken care of your car.

A race between you car and his will come down to driver skill, not the absence of 5 hp in stock form.

makes you wonder why ford made the CSVT with '195'hp to begin with. its a psychological thing almost. 200hp sounds much better than 195. that is most likely why they bumped it to 200, if in fact there is a 'real difference', and not just marketing hype. I see this kind of thing all the time as I work in marketing and advertising.
like the other guy says, driver skill. I used to race my friend at the track in his 200 hp prelude. I had a 165 hp probe, but I would always pull away from him. He shifted too soon, which of course robs you of the high rpm power when the cams change.

If you're really worried about it, get a DiabloSport chip, that's GOTTA throw in some extra ponies.

Car & Driver times for E0 and E1 SVT Contours:
0-60: E0 - 7.1 sec, E1 - 6.9 sec 1/4 mile: E0 - 15.4 sec, E1 - 15.4 sec
These are stock cars, of course, separated by nearly two years, with different drivers. Infer what you can about the numbers but with identical quarter mile times, I think the differences in an E0 and E1 are close to imperceptable in everyday driving.

hehe, my driving is better than his!! lol, I've raced a lot more than he has, but he is pretty darn good at keeping up with me. I think I know the shift patter better than he does, but I could be wrong!
