Don't the dealers there do the testing aswell? They do here.
If you went to the dealer that couldn't figure out the cel, they might just pass you since they found nothing causing it.

Why not undo the bulb or wire so they can't see your CEL?

Even with your CEL on, your car would still pass emissions.

Just unhook the damn thing.

In MD, the emissions test for an OBDII equipped car is just through the port - no treadmill or tailpipe check. My '95 (pre-OBDII) gets a treadmill test; my 2000 Windstar is hooked through the OBDII port for just a few moments and I'm on my way. Which means it won't pass if there's a CEL.

In MD, all emissions testing is done by state-run facilities, not dealers or shops.

my best friend's dad has an autobody and regularly does emissions inspections ( i live in new york). gustavo, my friend..told me that my cel would have automatically failed me but i was passed b/c im me

Can you really fail just for a CEL? The light can mean any one of a thousand things, not just emissions!!! I guess it all depends on who you go to. My SVT and the old mystique always passed, with CEL's. I do know people who will pass you regardless, but I haven't had to use them.

In oregon one loophole is a license plate transfer. It costs $6 to transfer a good plate with good tags from one vehicle to another. The experation of the tags on the transfered plate transfer with the plate. Very handy if you have a dead car with good tags and vice versa. Maybe transfer the plates between two running cars cost = $12 and then run the passing car through DEQ again =$100+ dollars for both cars, total cost $112+ for both cars and transfer of plates, it beats not being able to drive the car.

In NJ, you will fail for a CEL and if the system is not in ready mode. It takes a few drive cycles to get into ready mode, so if the battery is disconnected and codes cleared, you will fail. Been there, done that.

other thing i was thinking...my friend has a 98svt no cel(imagine that!!) if i could find someone to do this they could scan my car barcode hook his tour up to the computer and albany would think that my car runs fine!!! would ya think

CEL comes on at start-up to check the bulb. So it would still fail since the system is not working right. Plus they check the diagnostic port which will indicate MIL (CEL) is on.
