Which Porsche would you buy for $29,000?
1985 911 Carrera Coupe, near mint condition, 22,000 miles, Guards Red over Mocha, genuine Fuchs, most records, only 5k in last 12 years
1989 911 Turbo Coupe, poor to moderate condition, 88,000 miles, limited history, Guards Red over Beige, some signs of abuse, but a strong (locally rebuilt) motor / tranny (mechanical beast, cosmetic dog)

85 hands down

The '85 is too much money for that price. You should be able to find a hard-top 993 for $30K with 50K miles or so. Best of the air-cooled world.

'930 slant nose for that Miami Vice feel.

No interest what so ever in a non factory slant cab.

A 993 with average mileage and hokey aftermarket body panels/tail, turbo script on a non turbo car says run like the wind...

the red 993 is listed as fwd? What other surprises lurk there in?

Both SCM and Excellence value the 1985 at ~$25K (+10 to 15% for low mileage). So, $27,500 - $28,750 would seem reasonable. The car truely is near mint.

Having said all that, I would probably offer up to $26,000 max.

More info:

1985 Carrera Coupe
Guards Red over Brown Leather
Sunroof
Headlight washers
16" Fuchs (black centers)
Most records
near mint body - no dings, dents or rust
clean interior (Mild cracking on seats and very slight dash warp)
All guages work
HVAC untested, but fan works...
Power drivers seat
newer (70% left) Yoko A008
Power windows
21,8xx miles
WPOAB0913FS120642
Asking $29,000 (independant dealer)

What would you offer for this car, assuming no skeletons and a passing PPI? Thius car has averaged barely 1,000 miles a year!

VIN says 993 Carrera - not a C4S. A sheep in wolfs clothing and a mis representation.

993's are hot, so hot they are hard to find in an unmolested state. Last of the best!!!!!!!

Understood, but after test driving a 993 cab and being in many earlier 911's there is no way I would want an earlier 911 unless it was a slant nose. Interior is just too old skool and the creature comforts one has come to expect is just not there.

993's are plentiful in the $30 - $35K range.

Coupe for me please. However, that is one hot 993 Targa at a very reasonable price. I hear you on the comfort/refinement of the newer cars, but there is something magical about the older, lighter cars.

After an couple of hours of reading this evening, I'm going to pass on the '85 Carrera. It's really tight, but the interior color isn't me and someone else will be willing to ante up more than I would for the car. The car will no doubt get some attention from the purists out there as it is so clean and has so few miles on it. Bongers 'Data Book' and Paternie's 'Red Book' show the car as an "F" programme fully loaded except for the M630 "Police Option"

never buy a porsche with no history

Condition is worth paying for. I did this with my RX-7, and I don't regret it a second.

I'd go with the 85 no doubt. You're obviously buying this as a car for nice days that will only see occasional use, why inherit someone elses problems?

Not sure if you want air cooled for sure or not, but earlier 996's are around the same price point from what I have seen (although I am not a porsche expert).

85. turbo will give you problems down the line and $29k is too much for something that looks abused.

Just for kicks, what are your thoughts on a low-mileage 1997 C4S Carerra (no fake turbo tail) with all the records and such?

I really don't like the post-97 bodies for the most part and stepping back into the 80's scares me a bit on a Porsche.

Reliable? Relatively easy to maintain?

94K miles and salvage titled. This car is way overpriced at $32K.
