Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to edit the registry from the c: prompt? I have searched all over google, having the problem with XP logging in and then logging off right away.
Can you get into safe mode ?
I have been in safe mode and it still does the same thing. Same no matter what I do including logging in as the administrator.
What are you trying to do?
Okay ... never used it, but a quick google found this.

maybe im dreaming or something here but this sounds like that virus that went around recently that makes the comp reboot. i remember the fix is simple. unfortunately i cannot remember the name or what exactly the fix was. maybe someone will know what i am talking about or correct me if am way off.
sorry this post is of no help
It's a virus. In order to get rid of it you have to run a virus scan at startup before the operating system loads. Norton will do it. You just have to have the CD in the drive when you start the computer.
I'll have a look at it later, when I'm at a PC with a FDD.
Out of interest, are you using NTFS file system, or FAT32 on XP. If so can you view your C: drive from your floppy ?
If you have NTFS, and are using a FAT floppy, you will not be able to see your drive.
I'll let you know what happens when I try the prog.
It is set up in FAT32, this is the family pc, not mine. I can see the c drive when i type C:dir but the program says that it is not supported in dos
thanks for looking into it
I'll check for another one to use.
What you could try, not sure if it works in XP, is to use go to C:\windows\system32
Now I can't remember if this is the correct file, but
Type regwiz /?
and see if it gives you an option to restore a registry.
