Contour Enthusiasts Group Archives
Hey everyone,
I have posted this over in the Duratec forum as well.
Currently DemonSVT and I are putting together a FAQ that will be updated regularly with a lot of quality information. I wanted to extend on this a bit, and have an exhaust database.
That way, there would be one webpage with all sorts of exhaust options, real-world opinions, video clips, and sound clips. This is where I need your help though!
If you have a modified exhaust, you can help out!
What I will need from you:

Name:
Board name:
Engine/Tranny: (SVT V6/MTX...)
Detailed list of your exhaust mod: (I.E... 2.25" Mandrel bent single pipe with a 2" resonator to 2" quasi-dual pipes with baffled rear mufflers and 2.5" tips.)
Cost/Installation Charge: I.E...$500 for the parts, and $100 for the install.
Opinion: (what it sounds like when cold/warm. rasp? droan?)
Misc. Info: (anything that would be helpful to aide someone in their exhaust decision.)

Feel free to email me as well! Contact me via PM or Email about sound/video clips!

Thanks everyone for your time, hopefully it will be a big success! Mods, if you can sticky this topic, it would be greatly appreciated!

Zetec ATX
SVT exhaust
$20 parts, $40 install
Sounds perfect...nice low growl, but won't wake the neighbors.
Installation is a pain on the Zetec. Having no Y-pipe, you're left about a foot short for the connection. Have a plasma cutter handy and cut the pipe from the resonator to the connecting flange from you stock exhaust. Do same for SVT exhaust. Trade them, and weld on, making sure that the exhaust hanger peg is lined up correctly. Also note: Need an exhaust hanger on pass. side.

Nice low tone at idle, a lot of rasp at full throttle, will wake up your neighbors a couple of blocks away! I am serious.
If you consider doing a race header make sure you can handle more noise.

some what quiet at idle has a deep tone and just gets louder and louder as you hit the gas. and there is no rasp weather the car is cold or has been warmed up. people that have heard it think I have a perfromance V6 under the hood
I got this exaust through a trade with another Contour owner who was looking to make his quieter due to the race headers he has on his duratec all I payed for was labor and a hanger for the second outlet pipe which was $150 to put my exaust on his car and put his on mine.

SVT Exhaust w/ resonators still on

$75 for exhaust (not cut/from local CEGer) - six pack of beer for install by StreetFlight.

Very subdued at idle and when casually rowing the gears. Really wakes up under hard accelaration and has a very, very nice tone when engine braking. My CAI makes more noise than the exhaust usually

I dynoed the exhaust and lost nothing down low and gained a couple HP throughout the upper revs.

If someone has audio of a Zetec w/ SVT exhaust and no resonators, I'd love to hear it.

2.25 mandrel bent pipe with no resonator. The 2.25 pipe starts right after the flex pipe and runs into a flowmaster 40 series muffler.

Muffler $70 installation and pipes $80
Makes a deep sound when on idle, when its cold it will rasp just a bit but the rasp will go away quick. It sounds deep all the time, its not very loud and wont wake your neighbors unless you gun it. Cruising it is not loud at all and will keep cops away from you. If you are looking for a perfect sleeper this is the one for you.

2.25" mandrel bent pipe after stock resonator. Dualed out behind gas tank, which is straight piped out to 2.5" chrome tips in svt bumper openings.

$75 to have stock exhaust removed at resonator and Y'd out to 2 straight pipes w/ chrome tips.

Has a nice growl at idle. A tad raspy when extremely cold but once warm has a nice note to it. Not extremely loud unless really getting on it, and really little or no droning at highway speeds. Sound varies when getting on it. Sometimes it's deep and throaty, other times it's just annoying, but what exhaust isn't at times. Also has a nice growl when coming to a stop from speed.
Started out to just be something temporary or so I though but it has grown on me to where I think I'll keep it like it is.

not a bad start, would like to enlarge piping from res forward, maybe a hi flow cat, then better mufflers

Local muffler shop. Aprox $325. 2.5" pipe starting after flex. Custom y-pipe just before fuel tank. Splits to two small glass packs and then very nice large tips. Was too loud so I put a third large inline resognater ater the cat, before the fuel tank. Starts/idles very nice. Sounds great in the car, especially when revving. I found, however, that it only sounds good when you are inside the car, probably due to induction (giant AFE cone filter, no air box). When wifey drives it down the strett and gases it, it sounds just a tad ricey and I don't like that. Maybe I'm crazy, but I really wanted it to sound just like a stock Mustang GT!!! Also, in low RPMs, like 1,200, under heavy load (stupid ATX), the drone can still be somewhat loud even with third large glass pack resognator (stock resognator removed).
where can i find this exhaust system at
Another update: Dynomax ultraflow in resonator location....no muffler at the rear of car. Nice and quiet at idle and cruising...get on it...the loudest Zetec out there!
<<No resonator and no muffler,, pretty loud and decent performance/cost ratio.
I have the same exhaust almost my can is slightly different but I love it to death sounds awsome when the car is modified and looks great from behind.
I went to my local muffler shop and got 2.25 pipe put on in place of resonater, and then all the way to the back into a magnaflow muffler. Nice sound, not loud at all but has a little growl, can feel it nicly when going around a corner.

Nothing really. Used to have no muffler. That was a little nice. Sounded like crap when it was idling or coming down while placed in a gear. Now I have a Type RS muffler (It is really good! I promise) which can be Fairly loud when needed. Nice and loud when WOT (Intake is still louder... intake is REALLY loud) and it is deep. Not ricey AT ALL.
Cost was 60 bucks for the muffler off e-bay and 77 tohave it installed. I had about 5 feet of 2.25 of new exhaust put on.

This will be GREAT!! But this thread has been around for some time now & I have not seen any links to a sound clip database or web page.

Obviously, there will be separate listings for I-4 & V-6 cars. Would it be a waste of time to further delineate single Vs dual exhaust exit categories?

I also suggest that we standardize the recording location (6" behind the driver side tail light) so all clips can be compared directly.

So, any collection of files yet?
UPDATE:

Possibly the final exhaust mod for this zetec.

SVT Exhaust w/ stock resonator and rear mufflers replaced with straight pipe.

IMO fairly quiet, no rasp and cannot be heard over the CTA intake.

I give it a thumbs up, looks nice too.

I have a sound clip of my CTA stock exhaust. But it's big-ish 40 MB and I don't know how to shorten it.
compress it into an MP3... what format is it now? If you have MSN messenger or AOL instant messenger, you could send it to me and I'll do it for you if you like.
It's a Video clip with no video only sound. Type of file....I checked, all it said was Video File, and it opens with WMP. Could I Winzip it? I don't know how to Mp3 it.
If you could zip it, I could run it through my video editing software and pull the audio track out, then convert it to MP3. That's the only way to get it to a native audio format at this point. The file sounds like it's an MPEG-1, but that's a good thing for pulling the audio off...

Opinion: At idle, it sounds almost stock. At moderate throttle it's definately louder than stock. At WOT, it's a helluva lot louder than stock. Just cruizing around the grocery store parking lot, you could tell it was louder, but not obnoxious. It won't take any trophies for loudness, but it's got a mellow, deep and even tone with a little rasp when cold, but that's it. Even on the freeway at +/- 75 there's no drone.
Misc. Info: If you want a nice, mellow sounding exhaust that's not going to get you a ticket, this is it. I'm very impressed with the increase in the low end torque I've gained and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's loud when I want it to be, but quiet when I need it to be. I had a guy standing next to the car when I first started it and he said "You just had exhaust work done?" then I floored it, and then it floored him. His expression was priceless. Something like:

very deep at idle with slight burble. smooth, healthy, agressive sound while accelerating. no angry bees or rice rocket cans. deceleration in gear creates a deep resonation in and outside of the car with no popping or undesirable noises. just slightly louder than stock while cruising with no droning,.. very livable. will rasp a little initially after start up for a short time if engine is cold, but will go away quickly as motor warms. overall a very clean, sporty sound, from a system that provides much improved flow resulting in more horsepower, torque, and fun.

I have a question for you guys, What would a I-4 sound like with no resonater and mufflers? I am contemplating that or a full exhaust...

STeve
Do a high flow resonator and no mufflers.
Oooops... i meant an SVT exhaust
What would an SVT exhaust sound like without the resonater but with the mufflers.

Steve
First: Scrapped everything from rez back and upped pipe to 2¼. Then y"d off at next to last bend and on back to 2 nice chrome angle cut with rolled edges tips. looks great but too loud.

Second: replaced rez with glasspack. Better but still to loud for me.

Third: Added mini GP's just before the tips. Now we're getting somewhere, it's much more better although I'm thinking about replacing the mid GP with a Cherry Bomb twin tube GP. They say it gives you the performance of a GP but the quite of a turbo muffler

$'s: Don't ask!
Yeh i have a ? about cutting out the resinator. Do i need 2.25 ID or OD pipe and how long should i get it. Another ?, weld it or clamp it. I work for AutoZone, so parts are CHEAP for me. Thanx

Detailed list of your exhaust mod:Mystery mod, SVT exhaust, with aftermarket resonator (cant remember brand) with polished Magnaflows (were on the exhaust when I bought it) running into ~3.5" tips.
Cost/Installation Charge: <$150
Opinion: Quiet at idle. The vibrations from the (4) poly motors mounts make more noise then the exhaust puts off. Interior drone is there, especially at 3500 RPMs and when shifting. Again I believe this is due to the mounts and not the exhaust. Up into the RPMs it has somewhat of a ricey sound, but a lot deeper. Im happy with it.
Misc. Info: I doubt its going to be calling the cops to come get me, but if I was in a quiet neighborhood and someone had their windows open, they would hear me. Cant judge power differences as it was installed when I did my ATX/MTX swap.

Misc. info:Catches people at the track by supprise everytime. When down RPMs, has a slight wine. Really good, suggested. Im about to remove the res and go w/the 2.25" piping and see what happens.
he i have a 96 mystique with the rear muffler cut out and the rest is stock..it was realy quite but then i think the resonater blew out or something cause man its loud now..but only at certain points..if i have it har don throttle it isnt to bad sounds like a truck ahha serioulsy it does and when i down shift lets say to second gear at 60 kmh which is at 4000 it has a cool vibration sound and man it echoes off of buildings sucha unique sound to it..but i was thinking of putting a glass pack in place fo the resonter or a jsut a straight through smaller resonater into a magnaflow aluminized wiht 1 3/4 in and 1 3/4 out jsut so that it will have that sotck look ahah i dont want ot give anyhting away here for them civc guys haha so what do u guys think ? will it sound nice..or maybe shoul si jsut put a straight pipe in place of the resonater and that magnaflow muffler at the rear give me some ideas guys..i want a loud car under throttle something to scare people aahh casue around here cops dotn care...

Hello Folks,
I am returning to the mod scene. I have a 96 Contour GL-Sport, Zetec MTX.

I am looking to perform some serious mods:
1) CTA Intake.
2) Magnecor 8.5 wires, Bosch Platinum +4 plugs, voltage stabilizer. Am
considering an Accel CDI ignition as well
2) Brakes. Anyone know of how to convert drum to disc?
3) Strut bars and rear 21mm BAT bar, urethane bushings everywhere
4) Exhaust. Headers and catback
5) Fidanza alum flywheel, Unorthodox U/D pulley
6) Cyl head work, cams, intake manifold matching (to cyl head)

I have a bracket from A/C connecting to head, making the shorty Focus header impossible. I like the shorty b/c it allows me to use the stock cat.
However, I am looking at long tube headers (4-1, NOT 4-2-1) so that I can increase power. I plan to remove the stock resonator and put the stock cat down in it's current location. Is this a good idea?
I want to remain street legal.

Thanks,
Shamun

Just for the proper function of the unit, it might be a little too far downstream at that location. Additionally, you may want to keep the res to quiet the headers, then later on have the option to delete or upgrade to a Magnaflow.

For my daughters Zetec, I added the 4-1 headers and placed a new 'bullet' cat right after the headers. Kept the stock res which I plan to replace with a Magnaflow or similar in the next week or two.

Exhaust: removed res, stock pipe to rear,Flowmaster 40 with turn down (stock type )tip. Looks Stock.

and I've never heard it from the outside (drive by etc) Sorry
SOrry for the newbie post, please don't flame me! I am looking for an exhaust system for my 96. I recent purchased a Tsudo header from eBay. It is a long-tube 4-1 type, with O2 senson bung. Unfortunately, my current O2 sensor seems to attach to the cat (it looks like it). I am going to purchase a high-flow cat that I wish to place just aft of the header collector.
1) Do you recommend any particular high flow cat (brand, size, flanges (two or three bolt))?
2) I wish to replace the center resonator with a straight pine. Can the stock muffler handle the extra flow?
As for install, I sure hope that DanG is up for a project!

Many thanks,
Shamun

2.0" v6 contour pipes (walker)
flowmaster delta 60 muffler
turn down tip (flat black)

not loud, very deep, looks oem
2 1/4" pipe from flex back with 5x8 Magnaflow muffler in Resonator location. Exhaust was painted black with a 2.5" slash cut chrome tip at the end. Quiet as stock w/ res cut out but gets louder as your right foot goes down. Nice and mellow sound cruising.
