they used the reg I4 - the Elise GT1 is a converted Esprit GT1 to make it up to new regs.

My Dad worked for Lotus Race team in 1997 and did all the Chassis work on the Elise GT1 which used a lenghtened Elise Chassis to accomadate the Esprit V8 which they Couldn't use due to Homoligation reasons they had to Fit a Chevvy Short block V8 N/A

the I4 your Refering to is the Rover K-series engine fitted to standard Elise Road cars of which there are thousands and the Lotus Excige which is a hard top elise
