Do what you'd do when buying a used car....
Look at engine parts... Anything leaking? Screws turned (like the engine has been opened)?
Look above rear wheel ( at the wheel hugger, under-carriage, etc. ) for melted rubber (indicated burn-outs [ mis-used clutch ]).
Check suspension for smooth flow.
Check chain for stretching (lift the lower portion of the chain and note distance that it moved [should be about 1" - 1.5"] roll forward and do it again. If there is a change in distance, chain will need to be replaced soon.)
Ask about periodic maintenance... how often oil was changed, last time oil filter was changed... when chain was last oiled... if the bike ever sat up for a long period..., etc.,etc....
Start it up... listen for anything discerning.
If ANYTHING stands out, or crosses you funny, ask about it. If you get a bad feeling about it, DON'T buy it... get someone else to take a look at it.
If you do get it... Congrats! I HIGHLY suggest the MSF course, especially if you've never ridden before. Look around your town for sport bikers and touring bikers to hang around... i.e. Wednesday night is pretty much a staple 'bike night' at ANY Hooters... Motorcyclists are very friendly... let me preface that with MOST ALL...
Once you get on the road... be sure to wave at the other bikers... it's common courtesy.
Rubber side down...

Addendum: $2500 sounds like a GREAT price... Be sure to check for cosmetic damage as well. Ask if it has been dropped. Oh... And don't cry when you drop it in a parking lot or driveway... because you WILL drop it... everyone does at least once.
