I just came into possession of a computer that just came off lease. It is a Pentium 2, 450MHz XEON! First of all...the thing is just plain cool, the CPU is huge! And w the heatsink on it probably weighs 2lbs! Anyway, this thing is beefed up, whoever had it used it for entertainment purposes (would be better suited for a server). It's got a pretty decent video catd(for it's age), DVD decoder card, DVD drive, burner, etc. 256MB. The only "mod" i've given is is a IBM deskstar 7200RPM drive. I installed CP on it. I must say it has one of the fastest boot up times i've ever seen. The board also supports dual processors....it has one now. My current computer is a p3 750, 256, Radeon 64mb Video card. I'm wondering which I should keep. XEONS are neato...still expensive too ($200+!) I often use my computer for non work related stuff if you know what I mean lol!

have 3 of Dell P-IV Xeons around me at work. Those things are huge when compared to my puny workstation. Two of them have dual LCD displays and one is pretending to be a server until somebody actually goes and makes it a real working server wink

why don't you keep both? laugh

For computers that slow you can set them up to do dedicated tasks if you want, like an alarm system

:p

(just kidding; i'm typing this post on an emachines celeron 366 wink )

P.S. Keep both systems. Right now I have two computers, and hooked them up with a router. I'm sharing files and printer from the emachines to my new computer... if you're a true geek set it up to show off to your friends! laugh

Get and old full tower case paint it black, cut out a lexan window, add some neon to Xeon. You should be set. Just make sure you use XP Pro otherwise the secondary CPU won't be used. It's also a good idea to get the same SL spec Xeon. Look on Pricewatch, compgeeks, ebay, etc.

Congrats on the new PC. They may be old but they are still very usable.

*CoughPORNCough*

BTW Xeon is not a low end processor! And old Xeon can hang with most of today's desktop processors. I would throw another processor in it and get rid of the IBM deathstar! The deathstars are the reason the CEG used to slow down. They die rather quickly.

We just recieved 30 Dual Xeon P4's Dell Power Edge's. Fuggin Nuts! Not a spark or high end IBM but nice for what we need!

Hehe...and gaming!

The XEON is a very solid CPU, the 2MB of cache...as opposed to the 512kb you see on every other cpu these days is pretty much the reason. On ebay that CPU is still going for $250!!! If anything I'm going to atleast try to convince my boss to let me replace our current server with it. Only downside is loading 2000 Server and redoing all our "stuff" especially the VPN stuff (which is very cool though!). I do have XP pro on it now, if it becomes our server the deskstar will be gone, replaced with a couple of 10k RPM SCSI drives. I admit, I have a deskstar on my computer at home and it is hands down the best drive i've ever owned. laugh Before I do anything I want to load Q3 and run some benchmarks!
