[rant]
So, like most other geeks, I have a Gmail account which I use as a backup in case my own mail server goes down. My account name is simply my last name, as its a very uncommon last name (at least in the US). In fact, I had never come in contact in any way, shape, or form online (got my first email account in 1996) with someone having the same name. Until recently, that is.

Turns out there is someone who signed up for Gmail who has the same last name as me, but his account is firstname.lastname. This person has quite a few friends. I know this because they all seem to forget the firstname part of his email address, so I get to find out about how his hair looks, what parties he's going to, and what city he lives in. I fear for the day someone drunk emails him or send pictures of things I'd rather not see. I've tried responding back to the ones I get, but it seems like this person just keeps making more and more friends who have the same problem understanding his email address. The little devil on my right shoulder says I should just reply back and have a little fun, but I have too much of a conscience for that
[/rant]

Anyone ever have something like this happen to them? What did you do about it?

Have fun with it. Send an email to everyone that has emailed you and tell them you have animal fantasies.

Sure, you can spell that right, but you can't spell my screenname right? With a last name like Licksholus you'd think you'd be more respectful. Remember our drunk talk at Spring Zing?

I had someone email me with the same name. Never responded. Did he want me to throw a party for us or something?

I have a friend who had similar troubles because her e-mail address was her first initial, last name, and "06". She's an incredibly popular person, president of several clubs and a sorority, etc., and many people forgot the "06" in her e-mail address. The person whose address kept getting these accidental e-mails was kind enough to forward them to her for a few years until she got fed up. My advise is to e-mail this person (given that you know his e-mail address) and explain the situation. Kindly forward the e-mails for perhaps a few days and then start ignoring them (or having fun with them).

I have another friend whose campus e-mail address was a single character (for example, b@wpi.edu) and also got random e-mails often. However she never knew the person who they were intended for so she just enjoyed the pictures sent (usually of some family's puppy).

Because it's never the same people. Like I said, the guy has apparently has a lot of friends. Based on his location and his profession, it's possible this could go on for quite some time.

I'm pretty much at this point already. This has been going on since last year, and I contacted the person after the first one, as it contained some pictures I thought might be important.
