Does anyone know how to turn the freaking movie preview off on the top of the buddy list.
it freaking pisses me off when i go to open it then it starts playing. and yes i went threw the preferences thanks

No shat. I was just cursing it about 10 seconds before seeing this post. Quite annoying, just pops up/turns on whenever the hell it wants. Has to be a hack or something to turn it off.

i don't have that on mine I have a AOL autos add  iirc there is a play and stop button on it, maybe try that?

There are hacks to disable the ads (google for "aim ad removal")... Or get a different AIM client, I use Gaim personally. http://gaim.sourceforge.net/

I'm addicted to Adium for OSX .. shame there isn't a version, or at least a similar Trillian theme, for WinXP. Haven't found a Windows client I like yet. I know what you mean about the movie though - it forced me twice to use Gaim for a few days before the ad finally rotated again.
EDIT: forgot my favorite 'hack' for AIM: "DeadAIM." It costs $5 nowadays though and is only compatible with older versions of AIM (v5.5 and below) so I haven't used it since 2002.

amen for gaim. no ads, many more options than aol could have.
i also noticed that..even when closed..aolIM was using mroe processes than gaim was while open. absurd.

Well... I know a way to block MANY advertisments out there  Edit your HOSTS file. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txtMake that your HOSTS file on Windows. (HOSTS file on Windows XP = C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS ) I love it, surfing the web with about 90% Less ads. All ad servers are re-routed to 127.0.0.1 which is a PC's loopback address. Makes the site find nothing and Ping out and show blank in the ad space

I use Gaim also about 85% of the time...
But no file transfers kinda sucks.....
So I keep an older version of AIM installed just for that purpose.
