In the sunlight, my windshield has tons of little spots on it. Are these water spots or just rock/stone damage?

Water spots.

As water sits on your glass, it damages the glass leaving minerals/deposits behind. Trying to just wash it away is typically not enough - especially on older cars.

I would suggest trying:
One Grand Glass Polish
Sonus Glass & Chrome Polish
Zaino Z12 Glass Polish

Ok cool, I wanted to use the Sonus stuff but wasn't sure if it would work.

What about trying a claybar on the glass?...i read somewhere that it helps....i was thinking of giving it a shot on the rear window sometime since it has a lot of annoying water spots that don't seem to go away...anyone done it?

Clay bar will remove surface contaminants and may slightly help, but not hard stains/etching/damage.

A lot of people seem to forget, and its a small thing, but to keep the whole car wet when washing it. Keep rinsing it off, before the water has a chance to dry and create water spots.

I also suggest not using a nozzle at all.

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.

Usually it's some of both.

If it looks like a water spot, it's a water spot.

If it looks like a dust speck that won't come off, it's usually abrasion (rock/stone damage).

Claying the glass is worth a try for surface contaminants and water spots.

If your local auto parts store has Mothers Chrome Polish, try that, as it's an excellent mild exterior glass cleaner and polish for 3 or 4 bucks; otherwise try some of the other recommended products.

Rock chips will usually look like this. I repaired these the other day on an X5. The black you're seeing is air inside the break, which is not good.

And for reference, here is the first after I repaired it. I couldn't get a good picture of the second, sorry.

If it's a nick, it should appear white, almost like a bird poo splatter. There should be no black or clear lines associated with it.

If it is rock chips and you're going to Spring Zing, I'll fix them for you.

mine has the same condition. it is like the windsheild has been sand blasted. if i am driving it into the sun either early in the morning or at dusk it looks like the windsheild is dusty. it isnt dust. it is pitting. it would great to hear how yours turns out. a new windsheild is the other alternative.

Yep, that is what mine look like. My insurance has $1 copay for glass coverage, it is almost worth it to deliberaly put a baseball through the windshield.
