I'm in the process of ripping all my CD's to MP3 and storing them on a HD. My CD drive is pretty ancient - I think it's a 16/4/16, and it's taking forever. Would a newer drive, like a 52/32/52, make a huge difference?

Well technically there are several other variables that would come into play as far as speeding up the ripping process but in short yes a faster drive will show you a decrease in rip time.

if i might make another suggestion to rip them to WMA Lossless or Apple Lossless format (depending on if you use iTunes or an iPod). The file size is bigger and it takes longer to rip but they sound 100 times better. Your ears will thank you

Going to 48x or 52x will probably cut the rip time in half, maybe a little less than half. Plenty of other factors. Keep HDD & CD on separate IDE channels.

Man, 16x4x16, thats almost extinct. You'd definatley burn/rip faster w/ a 48x24x48, think about it, its 3 times faster than your drive. You can find them real cheap too.

Thanks guys, just picked up a Sony 52/32/52. You were right in that it's a little under twice as fast

While that is the theoretical raw transfer speed, actual rip/burn times are only about double. Overhead.
I had a 16x and it took about 5m30s to rip/burn 700MB. I have a 52x now and it's about 2m50s for 700MB.
